Can I ask why people always want cars from the UK?

Can you not get cars from other commonwealth countries (eg south africa)?

As someone has posted on this thread we wash are cars with salty water in the winter times....

    Thanks for any replies.

Are cars that much cheaper in the UK?

All commonwealth countries drive on the right.

They speak English in most commonwealth countries.

Just I know how bad some of the cars can be in the UK!! I used to own quite a few of them!!

2nd hand prices in the UK are what make them so tempting.

Yeah i agree, you can pick up a good Mk5 R32 for around $20000AUD, you'd be lucky to get a Mk4 for that in Australia. Decent Mk4's go for around $12-13000AUD for a 2004 model. More like $25-30000AUD here.

Stay away from those, I've heard that due to the twin turbos the lag is TWICE as bad.

A long old thread but can someone tell me where the rules can be found to importing a pre January 1989 car?

A old friend of mine in the UK has decided to let his mint Golf Cab go and I want to find out the ins and outs to bringing it here.

Thanks in advance to any help.

Isn't it June or July '89??
Because my mk2 is late January '89, and the guy who imported it had no troubles.

                          '76 Golf LS Swallowtail 4dr
                          '76 Golf Swallowtail 2dr
                          '89 Golf GTI 16V 2dr

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...les/index.aspx will have all the info you want mate.

Stiggy, yours was probably a personal import brought into the country when the owners migrated here?

Japanese auctions would be interesting I think, there are companies to do all the paper work for you. NZ has some interesting cars, and is pretty easy to physically get there to check them out, although you do have to be careful of the cars origins as they come from everywhere into NZ.

The main thing is it can't be substantially modified after that date.

For example, a mate of mine was looking at getting a 1977 Porsche 911 imported.

However, it had been fitted with a 993 engine. The 993 engine was from about 1995.

As a result it wasn't considered to be a pre 89.
