Similar boat, ordered touchup paint from the states and took nearly 4 weeks to arrive, was assured that it was just me but having read this I think I'll avoid USPS...

Regular mail from the USA (via USPS and hand off to Australia Post) takes longer by comparison. It's nothing new.
USPS do have many levels of product offerings though. You can get insured and tracked and "courier style" delivery options via USPS too. They're obviously more expensive than "regular mail" options. They are not quite as quick as Fed-ex 2-4 day express, but even recently I had an option sent via USPS that I ordered Monday, arrived Friday of the same week.
I.e. You get what you pay for. Big revelation here
