I don't know if you could really call it a family car, but it's technically mine We have a Evolution X MR Bathurst Edition. Great bit of kit. Seats 4 nicely & enough boot room to carry a pram & do the shopping... But probably not both at the same time
We had a Chrysler Voyager for most of my upbringing, it was the most comfortable car I've ever been in.
This. Was a very nice ride, fancy electric doors and such too which seemed cooled at 10 years of age. haha. Bucketloads of space, cool storage things ect. Was fun to drive when I got on my license too, had a surprising amount of go for a people mover.
Someone suggested the Pug 307? We have one of those too (not a wagon though) and its caused nothing but problems. Looks wrong to be driving it if your not a 50 year old lady, is slow as **** but uses as much fuel as my little vr6 and understeers like nothing else I've driven. Thousands have already been spent on repairs for it, and its burning oil now amongst other problems which is not good at all. Been telling the parents to get rid of that one while they can for a while

My dads had a voyager as well, those electric doors were fun
Screw you both! We had a 1997 and the 3 ton doors where not electric! It was going to be my car but dad sold it and bought the Bora which subsequently became mine, oh and it started my obsession.
2002 Volkswagen Bora V5 - 2007 Mazda 3 GT - 1998 Ford Contour Sport - 2010 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0T - 2013 Volkswagen Passat 130TDI - 2015 Ford Escape 1.5 - 2016 Subaru WRX - 2018 Volkswagen Golf R Wolfsburg Wagon

Yeah, they're a sad car - nothing at all like my older 306 was. Well, the 306 also needed thousands spent on it to keep it running but at least it looked pretty decent and was a fun drive (best handling FWD I've ever driven along with the MkI Ford Focus)

Hulking great SUV with low profile tyres...
You want sad???
Try my mums Daewoo Nubira that went back to the dealership 17 (SEVENTEEN!!!) times in 3 years!!!
Oh, then the clincher.
I was "gifted" this abomination.
A couple of years later, with the subsequent mocking by mates, I had actually developed some perverse attraction to the car. It was plucky as. I tried, yet couldn't kill it. Took it on many dirt roads with the back constantly getting sideways (wagon weight ) and developed good understeer in the wet control. Because it was so simple I knew exactly what it would do and when.
I miss it's practicality but not it's lousy performance lol.
Mums now got a Mazda2 and the old man gets around in a Subaru Outback.

We had an old one without the doors when I was younger too but I can't really remember it well. Still we moved out of that one after many years into a new luxury one so the parents must have liked it :p

I'd easily buy a new one when I have a family, too bad the Routan isn't coming to Australia.

You should see the cars in NYC, my dad lives there with my step mum and their two kids and at their school pick up it's all Chevy Suburbans and Escalades on 20's or some s-class merc's. It's ridiculous!!!
My initial thought was safety so i wanted to buy something slightly bigger for a bit of road presence and something slightly raised like an SUV type vehicle, so that the family are slightly more protected against side impact etc. The Touran would have been ideal, they are everywhere here and only realised they were not in australia when i looked for them on car sales. Other than that practicality, comfort and space was next on the list. I cant decide until i get up close and personal with a few of them before I buy.
Thanks everyone for the input, it has been most insightful! I will let you know how i get on next month(ish)....
Had the latest Mondeo wagon up to a few weeks back & it fitted family duties well.
Currently have a Gen5 Subaru Outback - ugly but the wife likes driving it.
My Octavia works as a family car but my girls (10 & 14) both have big feet & reckon it could be a fraction easier to get in & out. The Skoda would work well for a younger family.
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
