Dear oh dear! What a sad thread. Do right wing nutters buy VW?
There is nothing wrong with being right wing... I just hate Gillard, and all that she stands for... I HATE the Greens... HATE them...
I'm all for nuclear power, I'm all for immigration to those who qualify and skilled labour only, and I hate the Nanna State mentality that is stopping us from what we want to do... And even as I watch this, they are putting warning labels on alcohol now, much like smokes...
Was going to put this elsewhere but whilst the topic is hot....
Professor Ian Plimer could not have said it better!
If you've read his book you will agree, this is a good summary..
Are you sitting down?
Okay, here's the bombshell. The volcanic eruption in Iceland, since its first spewing of volcanic ash has, in just FOUR DAYS, NEGATED EVERY SINGLE EFFORT you have made in the past five years to control CO2emissions on our planet, all of you.
Of course you know about this evil carbon dioxide that we are trying to suppress, that vital chemical compound that every plant requires to live and grow, and to synthesize into oxygen for us humans, and all animal life.
I know, it's very disheartening to realize that all of the carbon emission savings you have accomplished while suffering the inconvenience and expense of: driving Prius hybrids, buying fabric grocery bags, sitting up till midnight to finish your kid's "The Green Revolution" science project, throwing out all of your non-green cleaning supplies, using only two squares of toilet paper, putting a brick in your toilet tank reservoir, selling your SUV and speedboat, vacationing at home instead of abroad, nearly getting hit every day on your bicycle, replacing all of your 50 cents light bulbs with $10.00 light bulbs...well, all of those things you have done have all gone down the tubes in just four days.
The volcanic ash emitted into the Earth's atmosphere in just four days- yes- FOUR - DAYS - ONLY by that volcano in Iceland, has totally erased every single effort you have made to reduce the evil beast, carbon. And there are around 200 active volcanoes on the planet spewing out this crud any one time-EVERY DAY.
I don't really want to rain on your parade too much, but I should mention that when the volcano Mt Pinatubo erupted in thePhilippines in 1991, it spewed out moregreenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the entire human race had emitted in its entire YEARS on earth. Yes folks, Mt Pinatubo was active for over one year, think about it.
Of course I shouldn't spoil this touchy-feely tree-hugging moment and mention the effect of solar and cosmic activity and the well-recognized 800-year global heating and cooling cycle, which keep happening, despite our completely insignificant efforts to affect climate change.
And I do wish I had a silver lining to this volcanic ash cloud but the fact of the matter is that the bush fire season across the western USA and Australia this year alone will negate your efforts to reduce carbon in our world for the next two to three years. And it happens every year.
Just remember that your government is trying to impose a whopping carbon tax onyou on the basis of the bogus ''human-caused'' climate change scenario.
Hey, isn't it interesting how they don't mention ''Global Warming'' any more, but just ''Climate Change'' - you know why? It's because the planet has COOLED by 0.7 degrees in the past century and these global warming bull artists got caught with their pants down.
And just keep in mind that you might yet have an Emissions Trading Scheme (that whopping new tax) on top of a carbon tax imposed on you, that will achieve absolutely nothing except make you poorer. It won't stop any volcanoes from erupting, that's for sure.
But hey ,relax, give the world a hug and have a nice day!
PS: I wonder if Iceland is buying carbon offsets or stuffing up their countries economy with a carbon tax?
lol... yeah, articles like that are amusing aren't they. I've seen that before.
It's why global warming and climate change just shouldn't even be the focus.
Efficent use of our natural resources and reduction of pollution in general should be. It has always bemused me why we're so focused on carbon emissions from cars for example, when nitrates and sulfer and other pollutants are just ignored! oh well.

I kinda agree with that. I also disagree with Monckton and Pilmer as they are no better than the spin artists on the other side. Actually, in some ways worse, but that is besides the point.
I try and live green where possible, not for any moral standpoint, just because it is a good thing to do.
I have no issue penalising those who think resources are there to simple waste, in fact it would not bother me if power and water, in particular, were more expensive.

I've heard the info about the volcanoes before, quite interesting and almost amusing really. I'd like to know exactly how much proof is in that, as i'm sure it has been sensationalised to some degree.. But I'd imagine there is quite a bit of truth to those claims.
I definitely agree with Blitzen's comment about nuclear power. It's a smart option, and done properly a safe one these days, too.
I am responsible (where I can be). I drive a diesel Mk1 GLD or Caddy TDI daily, both of which are more fuel efficient than a Prius in real world conditions. Don't get me wrong, I believe that doing things as efficiently as possible and as cleanly as possible is just common sense.. But I don't believe we should have this tax going thru.
One of the things that I have noticed is that people that tend to support this move are people that either work for the government directly or indirectly, or are students of some sort. In both cases I believe they are somewhat insulated from the "real world" and some of them seem to only follow trends because they don't want to feel alienated by their peers..
Some people might be offended by that last comment, but i'm just calling it as I see it and I am in no way referring to everyone in those fields being of my description.
the problem is with Nuclear, is that people still have nightmares of the cold war, Chernobel (or however you spell it!), and its association with the death and distruction and the like. Its a shame its been so beat up by the media, as its a very clean and effective source of power!
p.s I love how public opinion of Gillard and the Labour party are at its lowest thanks to the Carbon Tax, but she still believe's she's doing the right thing. So much for listening to the people.....
VW: it aint just a car, its a way of life There are few things more satisfying in life than finding a solution to a problem and implementing it

For the last 10 years or so at the Uni of NSW scientists have been carrying out an experiment on the effects of carbon dioxide on plant growth. What they have found is once carbon dioxide levels reach a certain point plant growth accelerates dramatically causing etiolation, which means plants grow so quickly they stretch and become weak. Etiolation will devastate food crops, weaken trees making them more susceptible to storm damage, and if levels go high enough spell the end of plant life. The scary thing is, they claim that at the rate the carbon dioxide levels are rising it could be too late to stop it happening.
Also, can anyone explain to me how do they plan to calculate the amount of carbon each individual business produces?
For the record I think this carbon tax is a fraud, there must be better ways to approach this.

The deniers will say it is all just part of a big conspiracy anyway, so what's the point?
As for doing what's right - there is doing what is right and there is doing what is popular. The two aren't always the same thing. Ending slavery was right - it was not popular. Ending child labour was right. It was not popular. You get the point?

+1 to that. Wouldn't bother me either so long as it was to fund actual progress and improvements.
