  • Lost license - driving until you get a replacement

So I've lost my license and I need to get it replaced on Saturday. If I get pulled over whats the deal ? Any chance of a fine or points deduction ?

    Cheers

So you lost your License Card... do you still have an old one around? I know when I renewed mine last time, they just holepunched it and told me to hang on to it for emergencies. Your license is still valid, but its proof to cops in the event of a RBT or equivalent.

I now use it for odd runs to the beach or gym.. if it gets lost it wont bother me

Yeah I just lost the physical card......chances of getting pulled over before I get the new one Saturday are minimal, was just curious as to my legal position ??

When you called to arrange a replacement, did you get any sort of receipt ID or service request ID number? Jot that down and should the need arise they can check it out with HQ

Why not report it as lost to the cops on their victim of crime number 131444 (NSW) that way you've got a leg to stand on as it recorded on their system.

I wasn't a victim of crime so won't be calling that number.

And I haven't arranged to get a new one, I will simply go to my local RTA on Saturday.

Anyway doesn't matter, chances of needing it before then are minimal.

do you know your licence number?

i do and have been pulled over without my wallet - simply quoted my licence number and provided one other form of ID and was sweet

Got any old VicRoads (or, erm, NSWRoads ) paperwork filed away somewhere? That might have it.

Don't you just call the appropriate department and tell them you've lost your licence card and can't get into the office to get a new one for a few days, they give you a receipt number of some description, or even your licence number over the phone, and you give that number to the cops should you get pulled over?

It's called the Police Assistance Line (PAL) and they take reports of lost property, sorry I used the incorrect name its not a victim of crime only service. It is an offence to drive around without your licence, hence I offered you the advice of reporting the licence lost. This would give you a reasonable excuse to tell the police which they could verify should you be unfortunate enough to be stopped.

As ralp2dam said, I would report it lost to PAL as a matter of course. QLD's equivalent takes lost property reports. Speaking from a QLd persepective - Qld Dept of Transport requires you to report it as lost to the Police. If reported, you get a crime number and if pulled up the Police can check that number on their computer and it will all check out. This will make it very easy in case you are on a P licence which you are required to produce. In Qld your replacement licence is marked as a duplicate.

Not produce licence = $86 fine and no demerit points. Showing an old licence MAY suffice, however does not negate the offence, nor does providing your licence number. This offence generally is dealt with an "attitude test" ie poor attitude = ticket.
