Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Average speed camera between Federal Highway turn off (from Hume) and Collector

    Hi Guys,
Does anyone know anything about these average speed cameras? Came across my first one the other day at the above location and wondered if these are just for heavy vehicles or will they book us car drivers as well? Are they actually measuring the average speed of cars or heavy vehicles only?

The RTA website seems to intimate that they are targetting vehicles 4 tonnes and over but will they still book private vehicles if they exceed the average speed? Seems to be a bit of a black hole for specific information on these things.

    Cheers
    Simon

I was thinking the same thing the other day at the same spot. I then noticed heading north of Albury the other day (from road signs) that the average speed cameras were targeting heavy vehicles... Although, it wouldn't surprise me that they were targeting light vehicles too... I'm giving it two weeks until the notice arrives in the mail, tha way I'll know for sure!!

I havent seen the one at the location you refer to but point to point cameras are only supposed to be used for heavy vehicles. They have left the door open so that in the future they can use the same cameras for all vehicles.

Have a read of this article, its dated Dec 2010. I dont think there have been any changes since then.

RTA plans for point to point speed cameras

I thought Safe-T-Cam did a similar thing when it came to truckies.

They're not car mounted, they're permanently mounted in gantries that sit over the road. The first one (the beggining of the timed run) is Canberra bound just after you turn off the Hume onto the Federal and the second (end of the timed run) is just before the Collector turn off.

Wonder what I saw then, was a car in the side of the road with 3 things mounted to the roof just sitting there

                    Maybe an RTA thing?
