Well, I had to end up going to the chemist during my lunch break, and then back to the grindstone - student email system was in meltdown and had to be fixed. So unfortunately I missed out - however I could definitely hear them.

Some guys from the office went up for a couple of hours, and are out now drinking with some CAMS guys. According to a facebook update

ride height is so high....

Indycars used to race at Laguna Sega, and they'd not run too much higher than normal (despite having the "corkscrew" which also has a huge drop). But unlike F1 with their titanium "rubbing blocks" under the car (or whatever they have there these days), Indycars used to have (still have?) wooden rubbing blocks... so they cars would just bottom out on them...

To my understanding F1 cars still run a "plank" to control their ride height but the problem is that it is measured at the end of the race. If its too worn then the car gets disqualified.

yeah - I just thought it'd be changed to titanium years ago in F1 - hence why you're constantly getting sparks instead of plumes of smoke every time they bottom out!

Indycar measure the plank too, though I'm sure they commentators mentioned that there were different allowances for Laguna Sega (like they'd only measure in the middle instead of the front and rear edges or something like that).

they seem not to shoot sparks out these days like they did in the 80's and 90's. makes me wonder if they still use Ti blocks??

F1 still uses a wooden plank along the bottom of the car. This is still measured to detect ride height infractions.

I haven't watched more than a single F1 race each year for the past decade... whilst I appreciate the speed and their technical prowess, the "racing" just isn't entertaining anymore like it was in the 80s and earlier. Much more entertaining racing out there these days than F1.

last years season was one the most exciting to watch that I can remember and I have been watching it for over 20 years.

The cars dont throw sparks like they used to because they dont run as low. The rules have been changed a lot over the years.

The plank was bought in from 1994 in an effort to slow cars down. It was found that his car bottoming out contributed to Ayrton Senna's death, and hence why you don't see the sparks any more (which looked really cool!!).
