  • Went to Phillip Island trackday yesterday

Well I didn't know where to post this, seeing as it isn't pics of my ride.

Well yestreday myself and Van(ssman) went to Phillip Island to a trackday to watch Paul in his R32.
It was a fun day just watching, myself and Van were commenting on how great it would be do do something like this (if our cars were setup for it lol)

At the start of the day, Paul said a instructor took him around the track in his (pauls) car to give him a idea of lines through corners, braking points etc, and he said it was amazing what someone with experence can do.

There was everything from a R35 GTR, Evo's, Go carts, Formula Fords, Porsches, V8's etc. I heard James (waterboys) Dad was around somewhere, I think he was instructing

Anyway here are a few pics

Thank for the pics Troy! Yeah so so much to learn! I started the day of really crap, and by the end of the day I was still crap but felt alot more confident. But I guess you have to start somewhere! Car feels awesome with the unibrace, really need slick tyres. Car is good...its just the driver that needs to practise on driving!

It was great to see Troy (vwthunder) and Van (ssman) there in their fully sick polos. Volkspower guys were also there, running the new golf r.

A mate was one of the guys racing the superkarts yesterday...he was lapping around the 1:45 mark! They are good little beasts and very quick...
Also had a mate with an Evo 8 there today, he managed a 1:57 even while hitting a 200km/h limiter early on the straight!
Good day out with some pretty insane cars from race-spec R35 GTR, M3, Porsche's etc etc...

What a great experience standing on to top of pit lane, the smell of race fuel, the noise, and the behind the scenes action.

Paul I think that a lot of us talk about it, want to do it, think that we are going to do it and in the end we watch people like yourself go out and give it a go. It was so cool to watch you on the track and every time you came in you always had a grin that went from ear to ear, it looked like so much fun. That's why I was congratulating you.

You can look at my pics on photo bucket user name (vssman) I'm posting a few that I thought were my best.

Just do the track days - don't worry about getting the car perfect for it as you will NEVER know what it is like on a track. In fact, track days are what you should use to develop your mods (or at least to decide which ones you need next as you discover the weak points in your vehicle set up.

Were the conditions slow (wet patches etc)? I would expect much better times than that.
Were the superkarts 125cc 2-stroke ones? 250 twin 2 strokes should be down in the 1:30's somewhere.

Conditions on the Saturday I believe were fairly much that same as the Sunday when I was there, with plenty of sunshine. (Mate's evo was coming back with plenty of fresh rubber pieces on his wheels)

Interesting re: lap times…you're probably thinking of the 250cc karts which are about 5 seconds quicker?

A quick search found the below lap records at PI for the karts:
125cc Rotax Light- Jason McIntyre: 1.57.242
125cc Rotax Heavy- Mark Wicks: 1.59.685
125cc Rotax Junior- Sean Whitfield: 2.02.4
                  125cc Gearbox - Russell Jamieson: 1.42.7163
                  250cc National - David Holdforth: 1.37.7053
                  250cc International - Warren McIllveen: 1.32.6516

My mate has a 125cc Gearbox, and won 2 of the 3 races on Saturday, with 1:45 lap times and wrong gearing. So with the right set-up hoping he can cut it down as the next meet there.

I was there on Sunday. Ran a 2:08 in my MK1.

                    Track conditions were fantastic.

Wow that is really cool Pete, how do you get the whole lap time/speed map thing on there, what do you use?
It gives me a idea of the track and how fast you are taking the corners, really good to study, would be nice to compare it to something else

The video is made up in two parts.

Part 1 is the race footage itself which was shot with a GoPro Hero HD camera mounted on the dashboard.

Part 2 is the data animation overlay.

                        • GPS data is captured by an Android Phone running TrackMaster software. (US$9.99)
                        • The raw GPS Data is animated as a video using racechrono2avi software (free)

The race data video is overlayed on the race footage using Pinnacle Studio12 video editing software.

Out right car lap record is 1:24 in a Formula Holden om slicks. I know super carts are quick but dang bro any thing undr 1:50 at PI is on the magic cloud...

I'm surprised that the 125s gearbox karts (I only associate the term superkart with gearbox/shifter karts) aren't lapping around the 1:40 mark given the aerodynamics, center of gravity, power/weight and tyres. The International 250 gearbox record that was posted (in the 1:32s) is where I expected them be but I would have thought that the 125s should be a lot closer than 10 seconds adrift.

Cool stuff! Interesting to see Sean Whitfield has the LR for Rotax Junior.. I remember he was a Rookie back when I was racing.. The old man had bags of money (bags!!) but they were nice people...
