Sorry... I'm not sure I see the point of these "Volkswagen model vs" threads - apart from creating big arguments.

Particularly with this particular comparison, the Guilietta is so new in Australia that there is unlikely to be many, if any, forum members who have actually seen it in person let alone driven it. Therefore all you're going to get is armchair commentary.

If you are thinking of making a purchase, do your research, look at both options thoroughly, and make the decision which is right for you. Nothing I or anyone else says here really matters when it comes to you making your choice...

Check out the Car magazine (UK) comparo from a few months back. Alfa Vs GTI vs RS250.

The GTI and RS250 tied for first, with the basic argument being both great cars, chose which one best suits your need.

The Alfa came dead last and did not challenge the other two on anything.

Great looking car though.

Btw - I have seen the Guilietta in person (in white) and I thought it looked stunning. The work mate that was with me though thought it looked terrible! I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As Ideo mentioned in his post, over seas reviews haven't been overly favourable to it...

QV was OK...

I have a Golf R on order, though I went ant test drove the QV only two weeks ago from the Alfa dealership next to Audi in Fortitude Valley. I know it's not directly competing with the R (more of a GTi rival) though I tested one anyway as I absolutely adore Alfas.

My opinion of the QV is that it's stunning, the dual glass folding roof is amazing and as far as style/kit included/price is concerned, I would have bought it over a GTi if I were ordering one.

However, while it does compare on performance to the GTi, it doesn't compare to the R I have on order. The engine is fantastic, extremely eager and happy, very sharp handling with very little hint of understeer despite being FWD and an all-round impressive drive.

If you're considering one over a GTi, I would definitely recommend you go to a dealership for a test drive as you will likely be extremely impressed. However, it cannot compare to the extra performance the R delivers, which is why it wasn't for me.

Oh, and last niggling bad point about the QV -- Alfa is not bringing it into Australia in the traditional bright Alfa red, which is the colour I would have ordered it in. If you want red, you'll have to settle for the deep burgundy red, which I'm not a fan of.

+1 on the looks front - they've done a very nice job with it.

But unlike the Top Gear guys, I don't subscribe to the theory that you need to have owned an Alfa Romeo to be a car enthusiast. I prefer being able to actually arrive at my chosen destination. Trouble-free motoring FTW.

Didn't you see last night where the Fiat Barchetta was the most reliable of the 3 convertibles they took to the Middle East?

My old Fiat did break down a lot but it was 20 years old and I did hammer it.

I'd love it if VW licenced the Multi-Air system from the Fiat group - they should be able to fit the new heads to the existing block reasonably easily.

This is not true, Alfa red Giuliettas are arriving here in a couple of months however i cannot see it suiting the car as much as the deeper red.

I have also driven the QV and liked it very much. I think it is good value for money compared to the GTi when taking into account the standard kit for the base price. The one thing that will keep it from coming anywhere near the wide appeal of the GTi is the lack of a DSG alternative, however I do enjoy a good manual and this has a great gearbox that allows you to get the most out of the engine.

Anyone looking at a GTi that can live with a manual should definitely check out the Giulietta. It will appeal to somebody that wants a bit more character in their car compared to a Golf as well as someone who wants something less common.

Also the belief that Alfas are unreliable is a myth with the modern cars, having owned 2 Italian cars from new in the past 4 years, I can testify to this.

There is a favourable review of the Guilietta QV from the Herald Sun Carsguide last week. Not quite at the GTI level but I think they really like it and gave it a 7/10. They prefered the smaller engine though.

I saw a white 4 leaf clover model with a black roof. I really want to like this car, however like the MiTo the nose / bonnet looks clumsy. Not one of Alfa's better styling creations.

i test drove one last friday with a friend, was alot of fun to drive possibly more than the GTI, the only thing that let it down was the dash compared to the 159 felt like it was missing something.

A friend of mine has a 3yo 159. It has let him down many times, but it does look good. He has had to get the clutch and actuator replaced in the selespeed. Cost $4600. After spitting the dummy at this cost in a car just out of warranty, Alfa came to the party to the tune of $1600.

He checked on a trade in.This car cost $49k on the road and is insured for 36k. Trade in on a Mazda CX-7? $11k. Alfas may be reliable for 2 years (and this is a BIG maybe). Just get rid of it when the warrantys up.
