After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Best states to drive in

Thought I'd start this topic given the big differences I've noticed between states for driving, being originally from NZ and having now driven quite some distances around the country.

Still haven't been to WA, NT or Tas, but out of the rest I'd probably rate ACT and NSW as tops, then SA, with Vic and Qld last.

An example - the drive along the Ipswich Hwy from Brisbane to Toowoomba is a nightmare. The speed limit constantly changes between 100, 90, 80 and 60, along terrible, terrible roads. Trying to swerve around all the potholes whilst keeping an eye out for the myriad of speed limit signs which seem to change for no reason, plus also keeping an eye firmly on the speedo in case yet another covert speed camera catches you off guard makes for fairly unpleasant driving.

The constant fear of being snapped by speed cameras is extremely disconcerting, particularly when the tolerance threshold is so low as in Qld and Vic. All well to say "don't speed", but what if a truck in the other lane is blocking the sign saying the speed limit has dropped by 10kmh? You're done.

Same in Melbourne - the artificially-low speed limit on the Hume Fwy entering from the north is so rigidly enforced that all the traffic travels dangerously close behind each other, exactly at the same speed across all lanes. Surely this is more of a hazard than driving a few kms over the limit? Interestingly, in these states I've noticed that drivers are less willing to move left to allow faster traffic to pass by. Must be again due to the "Speed Kills" mentality.

I'd say the ACT is the opposite in terms of driving enjoyment. There seems to be a much more relaxed attitude towards pervasive road "safety" campaigning by the police there, to the point where they're only really visible on the beat. You occasionally come across the speed camera vans, but the huge sign on the roof is visible from a mile away. Maybe it's just a matter of time before this changes, or maybe it's because it's the only place where the police are independent from the government (and therefore less incentive to raise revenue)? Seems to have the best road network from what I've seen so far (less area to cover and more Fed gov funding I suppose).

NSW also has pretty good roads on the whole (until the far north), and drivers generally seem skilled and considerate. Speed cameras are signposted (apart from the new mobile ones). Seen quite a few cars pulled over on the roads, but they were all travelling far above the speed limit.

I like SA's 110kmh speed limit on the majority of highways around the state, even if it's only a 2 lane road. Pity the roads around Adelaide are such poor quality.

    What's everyone else's thoughts?

Well for one W.A. roads are by far the best quality. When I drove the Mk2 back from perth to canberra there was bearly any bumps in the roads, S.A. roads were not to bad but VIC, NSW and ACT roads are balls.

And as for police, W.A. we saw 1 on the side of the road and he just waved to us... which was nice considering. S.A, VIC didnt see any. ACT is a mix of normal cops and AFP and they seem to have 'spots' they prefer to book in and living near the city next door (queanbeyan) I'd have to say NSW is the worst for police, cos they will pull you over for pretty much anything... Having lived in nsw, qld, Vic, NT, and now the act I can say that qld has by far the worst conditioned roads that I have driven on, with the NT having the best conditioned but most boring... Vic probably has the better road condition and view combination.
As for police, I have a less than glowing driving record, but by being nothing more than polite I have been let off more times than I have been booked... Even for a couple where I though I was completely buggered... Most notable was 26 over on the Hume at Liverpool...

          with Vic and Qld last
that qld has by far the worst conditioned roads that I have driven on
And now they're even more rooted with all the flooding that happened
Some of the pot-holes here are big enough to swallow my MK2, particularly on the Bruce Highway which coincedently happens to be the most danger Highway in Australia.

Watch some replays of Targa Tasmania and you will see that the Tassie roads on the West and East coasts are pretty impressive; when combined with logical speed limits and a lack of traffic it makes for great driving.

Definately not an enjoyable bit of road, especially with super firm/bouncy suspension and 2 inches of clearance off the ground :/ Suprised i havent done any real damage to the car along there yet, the sump took one hell of a hit a while back :S Havent driven along there since all the flooding, maybe they'll finally repair them and make them nice :O hahaha who am i kidding.

But yeah, even though i wasnt driving yet, tas seemed to have some cool roads when we went around there.

I think Tasmania for me has the best roads in Australia. Low traffic, low policing, decent speed limits.

Admittedly I was a local, but you were never far from a decent blat.

In late December on the Bruce, I was overtaken by a truck (who passed on the wrong side of the road legally other than his speed) and I was already doing just over the speed limit. Of course the car that followed the truck and was almost collected by an oncoming car...

QLD is not a very fun place to drive for fear of speed limits and the pretty poorly maintained roads.
VIC government is undertaking a review of the speed cameras but i doubt it will lead anywhere.

There are some great roads on the mountain ranges of SE-QLD/N-NSW however even driving these you spot police doing checks.

The best roads ever are in the south island of new zealand.
No police and long stretches of windy roads along the coast/hills is just amazing.

Is it outback QLD, or NT that has the no speed limit roads? I have a local road that's perfect for top speed runs haha.

Funny thing about NT is under every roadside tree providing shade in the middle of nowhere, there is a pair or family of Abo's pretending to be broken down. When you pull up and ask them if everything's okay, they just nag you for cash, ciggies and booze.

From memory they changed the road rules so that a maximum of 130km/h is now the speed limit in Rural NT

Correct. All the goodie-two-shoes and doctors and stuff were saying how terrible the accidents were in NT due to the unlimited speed limits. So they introduced a rule that any "unlimited road" was now limited to 130km/h. I believe that it came into effect in 2007.

Guess what effect that had on the NT road toll?!

Yeah, that's right, it went UP by a full 25%!!!.
Of course, the government doesn't make it easy to find that information, because it goes against everything they say about speed kills.
