Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Must stay away from you then!!!!!

Where did all go so wrong with the hot hatches? Must be our fault, the buyers, with our obsession for power. Every new generation has to have a few kilowatts more, more milimetres in every direction and more gizmos. If say VW would launch the Mk7 GTI with say 135 kW, spending serious money on chassis development, proper LSD and shaving off at least 250 kg, you reckon the punters would still buy it? Probably not. They want more power, that's all all they want really, and that's where the RS3 delivers. You want the most powerful "hot hatch"? You got it. Feel, soul, passion? Who cares when the damn thing gets you to 100 km/h under 5 seconds, right? Muscle car like then. Funny thing is, cars like the Corvette are shedding weight and learn how to corner as well. Strange world we live in...

135kw, <1250kg golf 2.0T? with a proper suspension set up and soul-stirring handling? i'd go in for that. but it aint the case. look at this pic, from the link you posted:

add just 5cms to the back of that, and you've got an a4 wagon (visually).

as for proper lsd- gotta love the ''revoknuckle'' style set up in the clio (i know renault came up with it first).

let's hope that people like renault can keep things "real" (damn, i kinda wish they had the twingo RS out here, too).

There's quite few Clios out doing track work at the moment.

They're bloody quick too! I have to work really hard in the MK1 to keep up and they're on street tyres!

Mainly I see 2 versions, a base model and the sport version, both have a bit more horsepower than I do and so can pull away from me in the straights.

If I'm driving perfectly I can close up on them in the corners but they're not pushing their cars nearly as hard as I am.

THE Renault Clio to have though is the V6, there's one in Australia. I met the owner and saw the car perform at Rob Roy Hillclimb.

About 255 Hp and the V6 is properly mid mounted. The engine compartment starts behind the front seats and ends four inches short of the tailgate. No room for a spare tyre let alone any shopping!

After seeing them perform on the track I've developed a lot of respect for the Clio.

Well, that's the thing, they're not. The RS 250 is as heavy as the GTI, has a turbocharged engine, just like the GTI and R. I think it gained some weight compared to the 225 as well... Plus, rumor has it the next Clio will be a turbocharged 1.6, akin the fast Minis... High revving atmos are a dieing breed due to cost saving, taxes and emission control. Knowing all that, I'm looking forward to a very, very long friendship with ma' Clio

We should stop talking about Renaults here. It is an RS3 thread after all, don't wanna be accused again of being a fanatic RS fan, which I'm not. I just love them hot hatches, always have. I'm sad to see them turn into grunty heavy buggers with less and less character, soul and fun...

man, what a machine. honestly, and being a torque junkie, i knew that the clio had its "cult" following, but i never thought i'd fall in love myself (until the other day- it was like being smacked in the head).

and yes, back OT - has anyone here got money stashed away, from back when there was speculation that the rs3 MIGHT have been coming to oz?

There's actually three in the country. Two Phase IIs (in Melbourne) like you posted in the photos and one Phase I (in Sydney).
Good to see that not everyone is so blinkered and can appreciate other makes of cars.

One of the ones in Melbourne was purchased from Adelaide I believe. Might be the same one. Amazing cars!

First generation was renowned for snap oversteer, second generation it was tamed and much more predictable. Levels of grip and handling were at supercar levels though. Also just because a car is snappy or a handful at the limit doesn't make disqualify it from being great. Porsche 911s anyone?
