Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

If your mate is on P plates this would be correct and the implications are:-

    1. If he gets picked up by the cops he can be charged with driving unlicensed &
    2. If he has an accident and is at fault, his insurance company will refuse to pay which will leave him liable to pay for the damage to both his and any other vehicle or property involved.

Ask yourself the questions, "Is it worth the risk?" "Am I willing to spend years paying off the debt that I will incur if this happens?"

Coming from someone who is a P plater with a full time job, I can assure you that you don't want to be putting every last dollar you earn into a loan to pay the car off. I work with guys who have $30k loans and live pay cheque to pay cheque. You might be able to pay it off, but you don't want to be spending everything on just a loan, it'll get old fast.

If you're keen on going fast, do what I've done, buy a reasonable daily that you can afford to change the tyres on, then splurge a little on a track car that has endless possibilities and lots of options for small or big budgets. No loans, no trouble from the Police, no worries...

finally someone who bothered to answer the question and not just straight away think "hoon" because they see "p plater" and "turbo" in the same sentence.
as far as i know the gti is legal in sydney as it is considered economical. there was an article on Car Advice | News | Reviews | Blog which said VWA had a meeting with rta and convinced them grant p platers and exemption to drive the gti. however i live in vic and the law is different.
maybe i should just take your advice and just "do my time"
        cheers for the help mate

I'm actually looking for a mk5 GTI. i might be good at saving up, but not 40-50k good.
It wasn't due to the 'p plater' or 'turbo', it was due to the way you write and how you act and everything. You came across as a typical douche bag who just wants to go fast but has no idea. (Note i said came doesn't mean you are, Also those douche bags are very common on forums who then react when ever someone says their a douche)

Also as said above, The police will bring up your licence plate which will tell them anything they need to know.

Why not go for a mk4 r32 or 4mo bora. Both N/A, Got good power and '4wd'. Good interiors and exteriors and can be made to handle and go quite fast (turbo'd can get to 500+ hp with $10k)

thanks for your post mate. yeah i kinda see where your coming from after re-reading the whold thrread again. i do come a long a douche. i guess its cause i've been on the ozhonda and tocau forum for a while and the majority of the people on there are mostly p platers like myself. while the people on this forum are more mature (i'm assuming since vw cars are aimed at the more high classed market) and hence would take the question more seriously.
i just got really annoyed at how people called me a spoilt brat etc, not knowing that i will be paying for the car myself with the money i made.

as for buying a new car, the mk4 r32 is a great N/A car, but not very fuel effiecint as the gti. i've decided to just drive around something cheap and save up some more for a golf R or whatever comes out in the next few years...
