Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • How hard can it be to buy an R32?

I thought I would share my R32 buying saga to date, just so you can all get a laugh at my expense. First off there are no R32s in Tasmania. So I had to look interstate.

There was nothing in Victoria that really fit the bill, or at least every time I rang about one it had just been sold or deposit taken etc.
Finally found what I wanted in NSW.

Pretty much arranged everything in relation to buying the R32, flights, ferry trip back to Tassie. Then found out that it was an insurance write off! Rang the bloke back and told him what I had found out. Apparently he had no idea.

Then found an even better one in NSW. Confirmed all bookings and was ready to go tomorrow to pick it up. Then I get a text a few hours ago saying that he had sold it, knowing I was on the way to hand over the cheque that was already drawn etc!?

So now, all flights are still booked and ferry ready to go on Sunday. Have two more R32s lined up for tomorrow in Sydney.

I wonder what else can go wrong now?

You're buying a VW. Plenty more things can go wrong.

It's not easy, that's all i can say!

Unfortunately i have to sell our jetta before i can buy a MK5 R32 so i'm not quiet up to the stage of organising flights etc like yourself.

I'm in Vic and the only couple that i have found that suit my requirements are in QLD or WA.

But to get the right car it is defiantly worth an interstate trip.

It's a bit rough when they get sold when you have organised everything.

          Anyway Good luck!

            Good luck Silver.

I'm not all that fussy Manaz. Got to get a baby seat in there once a year so five door is better. Like the idea of having a DSG, but like the security of a manual. Got a couple of five door DSGs lined up for tomorrow. See how it goes I guess.

There's a DSG-equipped 5 door 2008.5 model in blue at a dealership on the Pacific Highway in St Leonards. It has 26,000km on the clock. Dealer has it listed for $49,990 - way high in my opinion, but I'd assume it's negotiable...

A member here had one for sale for months that ended up getting delivered to the mainland because no one in Tassie wanted to buy it...

Sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble and i can not beleve that someone sold out from under you!
I'm in a similar boat but still in the early stages. In WA looking for an r32 and most on the east coast. I have the advantage of friends and family in Vic so its not too bad but most i haver seen that are what i want are in NSW/QLD.
                      MKV R32 - no mods..........yet

I feel for you as it took a while for us to locate ours with the specs that we needed. However, didn't have any of the horror stories you mentioned.

In the end, we had ours transported from WA back to VIC.

I noticed on carsales last night after reading your post that there were two that matched your requirements, one in NSW and one in Vic...both low kms?

I am now one very happy R32 owner

Flew up to Sydney with a backpack full of cash and back in Tassie today. Scored a Silver 08 five door with just over 20000kms (Now has 22000) DSG, sunroof, parking sensors and in pretty sweet condition. Has 12 months warranty left as well.
