No you don't! And if they are custom pistons you specify your own pin height!!
Yes you do. And whats wrong with specifying your own pin hight. FYI audi 1.9 had custom pistons, useing 144mm rods. If you were to use 144mm rods with 2lt pistons, it would actually bring the piston down cause of the pin hight on the piston. You either use custom longer rods or order pistons with the pin location lower to bring the piston up.
