Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tyres for Life!

I just bought my mk5 gti from Sinclair Ford in Kingswood (near Penrith NSW), and was interested to hear of their promotion.

If I continue to have my car serviced there, they will replace the tyres for the same ones I have now (good Continentals) for free, plus each service will be a maximum price of $215, including parts.

The tyres will need doing by the time it is due for it's 80k service, so to me, this seems to be a good deal.

Is there anything the Ford guys won't be able to do that a VW place would be able to do?

For the love of your Golf, please no!

I doubt that you get the same service like at VW specialists workshop.

Right now? I don't even have pants on!

I am guessing you mistyped "no"?

Can they get much wrong in just one service though? If it means a new set of tyres then surely it is a good thing?

                The simple answer to this is;

Yes, they can do log book services. That is not the issue. The issues surround the nuances of each model of car, availability of specialist diagnostic and service bulletins etc.

Your car has some expensive components that if are not monitored correctly will fail and ultimately cost you considerable money. More than some tyres, trust me on that.

Is the car a DSG or a Manual? How will they (Sincliar Ford) upgrade the software for the ECU and DSG?

Just food for thought. I can't tell you what to do, but I know what I have and will be doing with servicing - and despite the fact it is more expensive - I have been going to the dealer.

For what it is worth, I have found Nepean Motor Group VW to be cheaper than other dealers, and far more approachable as well.

                All the best.

And Sinclare Ford doesn't have the greatest of reputations... Mind you, just about any dealership in the Penrith area is poor...

you think Sinclare Ford will supply tyres as good of quality as OEM or near OEM volkswagen ones if their giving them away for free!.....
They will fit the same ones that are on there.

This type of offer is quite common in the USA, and you need to be sure that they don't skimp out on cheaper parts and supplies (like oil). Obviously they're doing it because as a commercial enterprise there is money it for them, and I'm sceptical of all "loyalty" type programs because they lock you in for a reason.

If you decide to go ahead with it, make sure you pop back and let us know how it went.

I am sceptical as well, I am trying to find the "catch", be it cheap parts, oil etc.

                        Will report back.

I don't want to rag on dealers of non vag brands in particular, but there is no way in hell I would trust an apprentice mechanic at ford or Holden to touch my vw. These cars are very particular when it comes to oils etc, and I can't see a Holden dealership stocking an array of vw specific lubricants just for their "bob Jane t marts spring service special" style for-the-clueless-masses-who-only-service-their-cars-every-other-year generic log book jobs

If the 80k service is just an oil & filter change its all good, free tyres!

But if anything breaks or goes wrong with it take it to a VW specialist...
