Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NEW MY WRX and STI

So had a look, $43900 for bluetooth, 7inch sat nav w/DVD, Leather, sunroof, 195kw and AWD. And new ones dont look to bad.. sedan in dark silver and for me sooner than later is pretty big deal.

Build quality cant touch an R or a GTI, but performance is there for sure.. and its all that for $44K which Is quite amazing..

less rear seat legroom than a polo.... well, it felt that way when i tested the impreza out...

whilst i do respect japanese cars, im sure if you're after el-cheapo performance, there's more bang-for-buck to be had elsewhere... holden or ford, or maybe the new hyundai twin turbo 6 cyl. thing there were rumors of....

as for the sti, doesnt that start to compare to the R, pricewise?

p.s. not ripping on either holden, ford, or hyundai, but its not as though the wrx is the performance steal of the century...

For what it's worth, we've owned four Subaru's from new and have never made more than 2 minor warranty claims and NEVER had any rattle problems with any of them, up to 7 years old now. So reliability is way up there.

        well, that's true.

my next door neighbor [husband, wife, two uni student kids] all drive liberties + 1 forester, they swear by them.

you raise a good point. i like the VW brand. i like the look of the cars. i know im onto a good thing with my AXR engined polo diesel [bombproof], but come time for a new car, it's looking like VW is having more than their share of mechanical issues.....

jesus, even after i test drove the GTD a month ago, a small plume of smoke was issuing from the engine bay- and we werent even pushing it hard....

I think calling it "el-cheapo" performance is pretty ignorant. It's just much better value for money.

Those new STIs look really good I reckon.

and many, many people would laugh at both the GTI/R and WRX crowds, and say that better value for money still, would be a holden SS.

''value for money'' being kw/$, that is, and ignoring all else....

For grunt per dollar the Ford XR6T / FPV F6 is where it's at.
Same price as a VW GTI new, or very cheap second-hand, with 300kw available at the wheels with a flash tune and catback.

HEAPS more on offer if you do the injectors, fuel pump etc. A mate of mine had an 6sp auto F6 with 420kw at the wheels which, as you can imagine, hauled arse.

The 6sp auto is brilliant too, and can handle lots of grunt. You can also reflash it to make it more aggro, it's as good as DSG really.

to be honest, im the kind of person [you know a few too, im sure] who would choose the new polo 1.2T over an XR6T, if someone were giving them to me for free.

im just weird like that. we're all a little weird in some way.... why else would we be driving VW's? lol

                      Agree completely.

I would rather spend the 70k on a lotus rather than a new HSV VE2 Grange or the FPV GT SC-5.0L

What's all this 'MY' **** anyway? Wasn't it a Subaru model prefix that everybody adopted into their cars title?

something about taking a small engine in a light car, and working with that, just tickles my fancy.

it'd be awesome to see someone get like 125kw/ 240nm out of the polo's little 1.2T.
