Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Maybe I should expand a little.
I know that legally we can't do anything. Here in South Australia we have the "Office of Consumer and Business Affairs." Reason I know we can't legally do anything is because my wife worked for them in a reasonably senior role for many years.
I also know commodes, had a VP (means very poor) a VT and still got a VX acclaim.
The first two were sold with well over 250k on the clock. VX is currently at 160k. Also had a camry sold at 440k and wife currently runs a V6 Odyssey with 260k.
When warranty runs out I do all my service and most repairs including engine rebuilds. Head planing and gearboxes were outsourced.

I'm just still trying to work out if these clowns are totally incompetent or going for the con. Either way, none of us will be going there again.
Must be vehicle dealers though, I now get my T5 sorted at a little specialist place in Holden Hill.

Never used the pellets, went for a better spec coolant and changed it every year. Needed almost 100 litres a year to do all the motors.

A few years back I took my Mk3 in to Highway VW to get an oil leak checked out as I was in the area and thought I might as well give them a go. They opened the bonnet, took a look for 5 seconds and told me that it needed a headgasket, rocker cover gasket and a few other things. I said that seems pretty extreme but told they took my details down and quoted me later for around 3k. They then kept ringing me and telling me that this was really important and that I should really come in the next morning.

A couple of arvos after this I had a bit of time on my hands so had a poke around and found the problem to be a shot oil sensor (a $12-$14 part + a bit of oil to top up). I picked the part up from VW Parts and the problem was solved in 25 mins.

And what exactly will the ACCC do? Absolutely nothing as it's not something they can act on.

Even fair trading will do exactly nothing about this.

But.....the dealer hasn't done anything...except provide a quote on work that you have yet to substantiate otherwise.

And unless they have the car disassembled by an expert, the condition documented and send the car in to this dealer there is absolutely no proof that the dealer is doing anything dodgy.

It's entirely conceivable that a mistake was made and when they went to perform the work they would have found it was a simple fix and charged the customer accordingly. It wouldn't be the first time a human made a mistake and it won't be the last.

                  Gotta watch those stealerships.

From what I gather, the OP's son-in-law's VZ had the V6 Daewoo-Tec 3.6L engine in it? Cooling problems are quite common in them. They tend to go through caps and thermostats like they're going out of style.
