Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Didn't know where to put this...

But I hate my sloppy shifter.

Looking at the USRT shifter but it's ~US$150. Then there's $10-$50 bush only kits.

    What's everyone else got?

ive got custom spun brass bushes where the linkages are, rather than the plastic ones, as precise shifting as you can get!

I'm using the bush replacement kits (changed out everything from the subframe forward) and it helped the side-to-side greatly. Back-and-forth play is still present, and I think I'll need to change out the shifter ball/bushings directly below the shift knob (gotta move the cat to gain access I think). I've got the Autotech short shifter too and it helps with the illusion that it tightens everything up too. I've got it at the shortest throw and it's perfect for me. Notchy without being difficult to get into gear.

The bush kit I bought was very cheap (from a UK site, don't remember the name...) and it's been on the car for approximately half a year now. One of the plastic ball-socket linkages (the short white one) broke on me just after a month of use and I was stuck with 3rd and 4th gear for a while hahaha. I may have received a crappy one as I've got my old one back in and it's serving me well.

USRT for the price, I suspect, is great if you're doing any racing. Otherwise the OEM replacements are good for another few years of service. Just remember to change out the shifter ball/bushings to eliminate all play.
      Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
      Present: Mk3 Golf variant.
