  • Stelvio Pass

I've been meaning to post these pics for ages, well nearly a year..

My missus and I did the drive last June while travelling around Europe, thanks to the Top Gear Greatest Driving Road episode for the inspiration. We started the day in Innsbruk, Austria where I picked up a rental Skoda Octavia TDI... i was hoping for an A3 Sportsback...... or a Lambo Gallardo like Clarkson but unfortunately they were out.

We crossed the italian border just after lunch and approached the pass at which point it started raining, which it continued to do so on and off for most of the avo. It was still by far the most spectacular drive I've ever done, something like 48 hairpins I've been told to get up to the 2750m peak.

After some photos, coffee, a delicious hotdog and snow ball fight we headed over the other side of the pass, down into Switzerland and eventually looping back toward Imst, Austria for beeeeeer!

    Enjoy..

    These guys are nuts..

stelvio pass is on the cards for sure...

but does anyone know what the name of that road in romania is called? the one from top gear, where they reckon that its pretty much all the great corners from all the great F1 tracks, linked together?

Drove the Stelvio Pass in September 2008

The scenery is amazing but the road itself is a bit of a let down really, very monotonus....I mean how many short straights and 180 degree turns can you make before it becomes a chore!

Plus the road is so narrow, with rock walls on either side if you come up behind someone overtaking is a pain, unless they let you past....luckily for us it was very quiet with only a Motorhome and Pajero to contend with.

Drove from Lucerne in Switzerland and stayed in Stevio overnight, snowed when we arrived and got down to about -10 degrees when we left the next morning!!

I much (much) prefered the roads thru the Swiss Alps actually, fast and free flowing, with no walls or barriers to speak of......amazing scenery as well.

Also hired a Golf GTi from Rent-Racecar.de at the Nurburgring, and went for an 'Orientation' lap with 'Theo' from Rent racecar in the Megane R26....which was a wild ride!!!

Nice pics, definitely wasn't that cold when I was there. Was also fairly quiet except for one F250(!?!) that i eventually got past, surprised it got around all the corners?

Swiss roads were quite the drive too.. continental Europe countryside/alps seems pretty awesome in general!
