Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

But turns out they can't insure it because of the 35mm drop.
    35mm drop?

Yeah, no probs. I'll put the results of my letter on this forum to see what happens. Shame with what happened to Pauly's GTI, but lucky enough he's off his Ps very soon, I still have a good 2 years. Just that I used to be into the riced up boxes that you see out there, thought I'd try to add some class to my life .

It'll be funny as if I manage to get an exemption for the GTI though..

Youi is a low to medium risk insurance company, and apparently having a 35mm drop increases your risk? Or maybe it indicates that I'm really a hoon at heart and I go racing around every corner in my 2.0 TDI?

Yeah but the difference is I'd cry over the GTI and would applaud the destruction of a Getz

Just wondering if you actually managed to get the 2011 Polo GTI approved or not as I'm also planning to apply for an exemption from Vicroads. It's a bit odd if does get rejected as it meets all of the exemption criteria:
Power-to-weight ratio: 132kw/1.184 tonnes = 111.49kw per tonne (between their 100kW and 125kW criteria) so pass.
It's a 5 seater (meets their definition of a family type vehicle, i.e. 4 seats or more and not a coupe) so pass.
2011 Polo GTI - Reflex silver, metallic. Ordered 29th Jan, received 8th Oct.

Where the Polo GTI fails is that it is marketted as the "sports" or "performance" version of the series. Therefore it is not likely it would be approved. The Golf GTI also passes both of those things, but as mentioned in this thread, Pauly was denied an excemption for the Golf GTI he already owned.

The following is not directed at you but at Vicroads. What a load of crap! How a car is marketed has nothing to do with its actual performance. Especially in this case where the performance of the Polo GTI is within the exemption range (100kw & 125kw per tonne). I would like to ask Vicroads should they come up with that response, aren't we banning cars based on them being too high performance and not what they're being called??? It's just stupid!
For example, a car with exact same specs but not marketed as the "sports" or "performance" version of the series would get a pass purely because it's got a different name! Hence there being nothing wrong with the Polo GTI save for the GTI badge.

What i would like to know is why is an R32 allowed, but GTI's banned, yet a jetta 147 can have an exemption, they run the same engine??
the a3 with the gti engine is ememptable???

                      a 3.0v6 quatro a4 is allowed, but not the 2.0T a4??

which guys at vicroads thought of any of this stuff??

R32 might be a "sports model", but it's not a turbo or supercharged car.
GTI is a "sports model" and has a turbo, so it's banned.
Jetta is not a "sports model" and it has a turbo, so you can get an exemption.

                        Pretty simple really...

Turbo and/or Supercharger + "Sports model" = not allowed

The Government associates FI cars with speed, not economy. I guess they're stuck in the days where only Skylines were turbo.

Further to this, it is a crap load easier to take a turbo car and crank up the output. A 110kW Polo becomes a 150kW Polo in a number of minutes, to get the same % power change in an R32 takes a while and a fair bit more cash. Either way, while you're on your P's just suck it up, get a bomb and have fun. Save up and make a 600HP S3 when you get off your P's.
