TNT is an acronym for trinitrotoluene but you can't pronounce it as a word. It has to be said as "tee-en-tee".

    That's just one example.

[edit] wait a sec... no that's an abbreviation.

for a simple question i've gotten a lot of different answers, no wonder this question has been bugging me!

      i've got:
      adj x 2
      aj x 1 + me
      ag x 3
      Vee Aye Gee x 2
      volkswagen audi group x 1

Though adj and aj might be the same

      almost needs a poll!

After only reading the acrynom on the web, i always pronounced it "vaj", but i'd get funny looks at work when i said it, hence my question here

great that's six different options now. i thought acronyms were supposed to make things easy!

i probably should have been more specific and said "how do you pronounce VAG when asking for where you left your VAG cable"
i.e. you wouldn't say, have you seen my VA group cable, i don't think

            Nope, that's an initialism.

it stands for "Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft" so you should pronounce it like that.

interesting, apparently volkswagen audi group is "obsolute", so now it is volkswagen group, or Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft as you say...

                    wiki
From the late 1970s to 1992, the acronym V.A.G was used by Volkswagen AG for group-wide activities, such as distribution and leasing.[6] Whilst there was no official meaning given for the V.A.G acronym, it was ascribed different meanings in different locations - in Germany Volkswagen Audi Gesellschaft was assumed, whilst in the United Kingdom, Volkswagen Audi Group was used on official communications.[citation needed]

On 4 July 1985, the company name was changed again - to Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft (usually abbreviated to Volkswagen AG), to reflect the company's increasing global diversification from its headquarters and main plant, the Volkswagenwerk in Wolfsburg. In 1986, Volkswagen acquired a controlling stake in the Spanish car manufacturer SEAT, S.A. and in 1991, Škoda automobilová a.s. of Czechoslovakia became a wholly-owned subsidiary.[22]
