Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

General consensus is the few thousand it would cost to change over to a similar age/condition manual car is CHEAPER and less likely to cause mechanical issues down the track.

I.e. trade in or sell your car and get a manual one.

You only ever do serious things like that if you really, really LOVE getting your hands dirty, spending HEAPS of time and ca$h, and it's more about the process than the end result. Engine and tranny swaps are rarely simple, problem free and straight forward.

Always simpler to buy the end result if that's what it's all about. Unless you can't buy it of course!

I looked into it many years ago for a Celica. Too many potential issues and parts in addition to the gearbox. If it were just the box and the stick, it would be easy.

Sell it and buy a manual.
You'll save money, rather then having to spend it as well as time.
It's rarely worth doing unless you really just want to learn how to.

thanks.im starting to change my mind now. i think of better keeping the auto and chase down a transmission control modual.some one told me if the first 9 digits of the part are combatible and the last two letters are the batch number like year and date. do you guys now anyone how might have a spaer tcu modual flotting around.
