Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Thread adapters?

Hi guys, I'm in need of a thread adapter:

Wondering where I can find them/have them made locally? Looking for one that has a female M12x1.5 and male 3/8"-16 (UNC). Any help is appreciated!

    Cheers.

that sort of fitting isnt standard it would have to be custom made in a lathe, maybe e fellow dubber in sydney would be able to make one at home or work
or just go to your local machinist

              I agree with Pete J.

What is the application its to be used for?

You may be making a mountain out of a mole hill & there just might something alot simpler to use.

I did a search through all my fitting catalogs which have a s$^tload of adapters to suit nearly every application, but there is nothing to be found that is like that.

I haven't even come across a time-sert adapter. Its either metric or imperial

Just want to use something out of the ordinary as a shifter knob. Thread size on the shifter shaft is M12x1.5 whereas the "shifter knob" is 3/8"-16. I don't know if I wanna go ahead with it, but if I do, it would be good to know where to go to - I haven't checked any places yet, but have scoured some online hardware sites and like you guys have pointed out, it's a very unusual application.

                  Ah ok.

It may be possible just to drill the shifter knob to remove some of the Imperial thread eg. 10mm drill bit & re-tap it with a M12x1.5 tap

Yep. Definitely the way to go.

FYI, for metric threads, just minus the thread pitch off the diameter and it will give you about the right size tapping drill. Eg: For M12x1.5, you would use a 10.5mm drill.

This will give you roughly 75% thread engagement which is plenty.

Awesome idea, my non-engineering mind had no clue that I could have that done. Thanks for the help fellas, much appreciated!
