Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

...more so Proton collider in Geneva...

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are. Not sure if this would cause much of a discussion here, but what do people really think about this?

$10bn was spent on theories... not facts.. just theories which is one thing that aggitates me about science. Im no scientist, or physicist, but for humanties sake, wouldnt we be better off spending the money on something worthwhile rather then try to prove theories?

But there have been so many "worthwhile" scientific discoveries that have been made by pure chance or even accident...

Things like electric current, x-rays and penicillin.

For "humanity's sake" we can't afford NOT to go looking for new discoveries, new technologies etc. For example one day, someone will work out how to have effectively an unlimited completely clean energy source. In fact it could already exist based on some theories but when the global economy is built on resources, it would collapse overnight if that technology was made mainstream.

Better than spending $10Bn on actors to make movies for 1 year when it could provide the answer to the creation of the universe and spark unparalleled scientific advancements.

And better than employing Manchester United for 2-3 seasons.

Science needs funding as it is what provides a better world for us to live in.
It also makes sure your health is looked after when you get older.

Im not trying to say science is waste of money. But when it comes spending big to "explore" theories associated with the universe and the big bang theory I have an issue with. Why not get the basics right and deal with the problems we have like curing cancers and not to sound like Im from a beauty pagent, but even more basic things like finding ways to reduce deaths related to food and water deprivation.

Correct me if im wrong, but an atom bomb that destroyed Hiroshima involved splitting an atom, what they're attempting to do now is collide 2 protons which for 'safety' reasons required the facility to be built 100km below ground based on 'estimations' and 'theories'. That being said I'd hate to be part of the group held responsible for destroying nation/s.

Dont hold me to my word, im talking out of what i know, so until someone can explain to me and justify the things that go on then maybe my views may change..

The problem with doing anything biologically related is that it takes an absolute age to complete and there is no certainty that it will even be approved for use as the ethics people get all aggrivated.
Biological diseases are also caused by multiple different issues and there is no quick fix solution as they differ between people.

It took Ian Fraser and his team over 20 years to come up with Gardasil (cevical cancer vaccine) and it took countless amounts of funding from the government and venture capital partners to get that far.

The hadron collider could potentially allow wormhole creation and clean energy creation which in themsleves can be seen as "more useful" than a vaccine which "may inhibit" 1 cause of cervical cancer.

The facility is not located 100km below ground either, it is located under lake Geneva and from memory is there as it is safe (can't be vandalised/weathered) and doesn't get in the way of everything as it is a 20km ring.

It already exists, you just have to look at the Star-Wars program...

All "Facts" are only theories until someone does the experimentation to prove or disprove them.
