What to bring for a trade in?? buying 2nd hand car from dealer questions...

I've never traded in a car or bought a 2nd hand car from a dealer before... so i'm just curious, what do i need to bring if i want to trade in my car??

Next question is... how long does it take to buy a 2nd hand car?? from what i gathered the car i'm buying is not registered, and also i'm buying from another state (live in sydney, car in canberra), the price comes with rego and ctp (drive away price)... so i'm wondering if i can do that in 1 day? or do i have to go back another day?

And also another 2nd hand car related question... as if i buy from a private seller, i can do a pre purchase inspection, can i do that with a dealer as well?

And also... as a VW new car comes with 3 year factory warranty... does that still exist if i buy it from a dealer (that is not vw)? the car is only 1 year old.

To cover off a few things at once for you... I may miss something here but bare with me.

You need:

1. Rego papers for your car (to sign over ownership)

2. If it's a dealer and a used car, then not long at all. They sign over the rego papers to you, you have over the money/cheque etc and drive away. It is fine to drive away with an ACT rego'd car in your name back to NSW.

3. You would need to go to the RTA, take the ACT rego papers from the dealer and the plates of the car. Hand them in. You will get a pro-rata refund on the ACT rego. As the price is drive away, the dealer will have paid stamp duty in the ACT for you. Make sure you have documentation of that with you when you go to the NSW RTA as you don't have to pay it again. You will have to pay for NSW rego and a CTP in NSW (CTP is included in ACT rego). So that's a cost to consider. I don't know about vehicle inspections going INTO NSW though but that could be another cost.

4. You keep the balance of new car warranty from the manufacturer until it runs out regardless of where you buy the 2nd hand car from.

5. You can do a pre-purchase inspection at a dealer, yes. But the dealer is also bound by law to sell you a 100% road worthy car or advise if it's not and why it's not. A private seller is not. So a 1 year old car from a dealer? If the test drive is fine and there's nothing obviously wrong, I wouldn't waste my time with an inspection. But that's just me.

The thing i'm worry about hence the inspection is that the car's value is slightly lower than most on the market... therefore i'm worried that it might of been in a crash previously, but the dealer is selling as "pristine condition".

But overall i guess it is pretty simple, the used car manager on the phone did say they will provide NSW registration etc... hopefully that doesn't take long...

just a quick question... so i bought the car...

1. so it comes with act number plates... does it come with ctp?
2. Do i "have to" change it to nsw number plates straight away? or can i wait until the act number plates expire?
3. Do i have to contact VW that i purchased the vehicle? as it should still have 21/2 years warranty (car 1st registered in july)
4. insurance question... would nrma insure my car with act number plates?

Seeing as you are buying from a Canberra dealer you could probably get them to register it in NSW in your name (but it will likely cost you some $$$). Canberra dealers would register cars in NSW all the time, as many of their buyers would be from NSW (Queanbeyan, Bungendore etc). It may be worth paying a bit extra to save you going to the RTA etc.

IIRC it would be illegal to continue to drive around on ACT plates for more than about 10 -14 days (and the ACT Rego people probably wouldn't let you transfer ownership to your name unless you gave them a [misleading] ACT address and an ACT licence number would also be a problem for you). It would be much better all way round to get NSW rego.

As long as you are willing to organise it (and pay for it) Im sure you could get someone to do a "pre-purchase check" on your behalf. Sorry, I don't know who to suggest would be best (the last s'hand vehicle I bought was a while back and it was a 4WD, so got it checked by a 4WD specialist). Maybe one of the local VW specialists could do a detailed check for you ? ( Canberra VW Centre have a good reputation here, and have a Belconnen and a Tuggeranong location).

got a questions regarding STAMP DUTY...

So i bought a car in ACT (which the deal stats drive away no more to pay including gov't stamp duty etc).

So today i went to the RTA and asked what do i need to do to transfer the registration of the car... so he said blue slip (which is a rip off $150), Green slip (expected), fees for rego and he said 3% stamp duty!!!

So what is the deal with stamp duty?? because when i asked the dealer, he didn't mention one thing about i have to pay stamp duty in NSW.

So while i was talking to the rta person, i said i have the registration from act, the contract etc. and he said you MIGHT not have to pay... but the car was in a don't give a toss mode, i don't know if he said that to tell me to bugger off, or is it true.

So do 2nd hand cars or demo/new (which it was advertised) have to pay stamp duty? or do ALL cars have to pay stamp duty even if it was from another state, and the stamp duty was paid there?

When you buy brand new, it is usually incorporated into your "drive away" price, meaning the dealership organises this all for you.

This is my understanding of how it all works. When you buy from ACT or QLD or interstate, im pretty sure you do not need a blue slip UNLESS it is out of rego. I could be wrong on this as I have never done it before.

No all cars from interstate that want to register in NSW need a blueslip. Its on the rta page.
