What is the country coming to? What does that mean? There's nothing wrong with the country just because you were speeding. You broke the law. 64 in a 60 zone is breaking the law. And the equipment that determined that has been certified to be accurate enough for it's function and is legislated as such. You are within your rights however to enquire as to proof that the equipment used was calibrated correctly and if it wasn't then you have a legitimate gripe.

Why do people complain about the penalties they get for breaking the law though? Don't break the law and you won't be penalised. I don't understand.

Because 3kms over the limit is not a fair tolerance. thats why. You cant be expected to drive with your eyes on the speedo the whole time. If youre doing 10kms over then yes you should be aware of that.

Havent you noticed that people drive 10kms under the speed limit in Melbourne? Have you noticed the severe tailgating that takes place on our freeways? Especially when morons drive so slow in the right hand lane?

The cameras are fallible. I have been issued two fines without having broken the posted speed limit. Both decisions have been overturned without going to court.
I hate to think how many people are fined in error every day.

I agree with you to an extent. Yes the technology should always be challenged to ensure it is accurate.

Yes I have noticed the traffic flows just under or around the speed limit down here and it actually feels safer as a result. People speed past me everywhere in Canberra and when I'm in Sydney. I have to say the driving experience in Melbourne has been a good one so far - but then I don't commute in peak hour.

Exactly, im all for enforcing the speed limits, but when you are picking hairs over 3-4 km/h then its not safety but revenue raising, espescially when its not an insignificant amount of money involved for a lot of people.

Dont worry though i never pay and fines, speeding, parking or otherwise without having a crack at contesting it.

Ironic that the only fine i EVER got in the GT was that one in over 2 years, and i dold it the following week.

The law is an arse. Break it wisely.

*sigh* Making a statement to break the law is never a "wise" comment. Regardless of how it's being broken.

Gee this threads found more detours than being on the Hwy.

The Newcastle/Sydney Fwy has had signs up for years telling heavy
vehicle drivers to remain in left two lanes when approaching hills, the
signs are spaced about every 200 metres along the sections effected.

Doesn't mean a thing to most of them as they overtake three abreast.
So to the OP and the article if the law is not policed like here in NSW
you will continue to see three trucks passing one another.

apparently it's okay drive 80kmh in a hundred zone, and 25kmh in a 60 zone, as well as to only indicate AFTER turning corners, but it's horrendously dangerous to drive a 1.4 tsi if you're a 29 year old business woman on her p's (my cousin got stung for $450 driving her husband's car).
I dont disagree mate, but its not often that the pathetically poorly skilled drivers actually get killed - they run off the road slowly, run into a wall or house, ding up their car but are seldom injured because its all low speed stuff. Even 80km/h being rear ended on the freeway isnt a fatal crash - but it does make a mess.

One thing I find a little bit disturbing is the amount of agro I see in this thread..... Ok, so you are held up by a slow car or truck in the wrong lane... but so what really? I find the best method to solving problems like this might be to a) teach people how to drive more safely; and b) teach people to take a breath and chill out. The road isnt a place to be agro - I drive the 'F3 of death' every day and the amount of agro I see is incredible, people really do need to chill out and slow down a bit....

Seriously, if you spend an extra 5 minutes to get to your destination, is it such a big deal?

yeah true, gld- i'll admit that im aware that more deaths in the media seem to be speed related rather than ''driving a camry on the median strip'' related.

i think it's just general driver awareness that needs to be addressed, rather than ''sweet! let some kids in some 20 yr old thundercougarfalconbird off themselves and then we can prey on..... speed, again, for our next campaign!''

yes, there's alot of aggro on here- dont know how the hell some of you guys actually manage to COMPLETE cruise days, lol. my aggression is towards people doing 2/3rds of the speed limit, (stubbornly/arrogantly?) NOT overtaking in the right hand lane (half the pricks driving back from buller in their suv's-because you NEED an suv when there's a paltry 1.5cm's of snow on the road), people indicating AFTER the fact etc etc.

if we could sort out the basics it'd surely make things abit safer for all involved...

A good start would be mandatory driving courses for new applicants.

I don't mean defensive driving courses. I mean proper "This is how you drive a car" courses. Like the stay upright course you have to do for motorbike licenses.

I don't really see the issue. They keep drumming into people that driving is a privilege and not a right, so make them pay for the courses. No extra cost to anyone except the people directly involved.

Hell, if they made everyone do it i'd be happy to. I think i'm quite a reasonable driver but i'm sure there's something i could learn from it.

-They seem to feel they need to stop everyone getting heart disease by telling them how to eat right, so why should they not stop people writing themselves off in cars by teaching them how to drive correctly?

dammit man- i had a nazi idea of mandatory license tests every 3 years at driver expense- but i was told by mates that that's just too strict and impractical.

i'd do it. i'm a crappy driver but even i know that INDICATING to others what you intend to do in the future, as opposed to REMINDING people what you've just done, is something in very short supply in lovely melbourne, the brutal-violence-in-your-garden state.
