  • Ducks!!!

    Weird subject but anyway,

I'm looking at getting a couple of ducks to run around the backyard at home & for my Nephew & Niece to have a play around with when there here being baby sat

Preferably the Khaki Campbell breed of ducks. (I like the colors!)

Not really getting them to breed or to lay eggs, although the Khaki Campbell breed are some of the best producers.

Just posting this up to see how many other members have some ducks running around there yards & if so, what breeds & how to you contain/shelter them.
Post up some pics if possible please.

We don't really have any fox problems down here in my area & I was thinking of setting up a large dog kennel with an old kiddy's pool for them to have a splash around in & also fencing off the driveway so they can't get out.

A some neighbors a few houses up have a group of ducks which come wandering down the back lane every now & then & don't seem to be bothered by much & always seem to end up at home.

The only dramas I could see is maybe from the cat (ducati) but he's a big girls blouse & just sits & watches the Magpies eat its food every morning the woos!!!

I just googled "ducks as pets"
You could have a new best friend!
A single pet duck can make a great pet but you should make sure you have enough time to devote to your duck. Make sure you get your duck very young or incubate the egg yourself and be the first thing he or she sees when it hatches. You will need to spend a lot of time bonding with your duck so that you and your family become the duck's flock. So you'll need to devote yourself to playing and just being with your duck everyday, on top of the usual cleaning and feeding duties.

Ducks are social animals and will suffer if they don't have companionship. So if you can't make this commitment for the full 12 or so years a duck can live, you should get two or more ducks.

I'm a pretty random sort of person! Hahaha

I found out I need a pond or something big enough they can at least dunk their heads in to clean their eye's & bills. That's why I'll use an old kiddy's pool I've got here. Pretty big & deep too.

          Yeah I know.

That's why I want to get at least 2 of them.

So they can bugger around & help bring some law into town in my garden! haha

Pretty cool just to see them them wandering around at home too.

Some friends have crazy breeds of chooks & pigeons & one even has a couple of Geese which are crazy protective!

I can remember him approaching the male & it took off after him flying approx. 8 feet in the air after him! Now that was piss funny! He crapped himself!

          Ducks are more placid.

chickens are cool. my parents have had them from time to time. Especially those lil bantams. Just make sure you dont get males though cos they are really aggressive and make a LOT of noise.

                  haha.

                  Nah. To obvious.

I'll think of something. Mum comes up with some cool names though, so I'm sure she'll have something good.

Just need to build a couple of gates & block some fences off & I should be there. A while off though

                    HAHAH

you wouldn't believe it. but check my facebook!

I want to get some ducks too!

I reckon it'd be cool as to have a couple of ducks wondering around the back yard.

Also wouldn't mind a chook or two.

Mum and Dad aren't so keen on the idea though. I'll work on em.

I was thinking along the same lines. get an old kennel & kiddy pool for water supply. and just get some chicken wire and build a 2-3 ft high fence to block em in, but still give them room enough to roam around during the day, and a kennel for sleeping etc.

I had a quick look on ebay, seems you can get a coop of sorts for about 200 bucks, but could probably knock something up pretty cheap, especially if it's hard rubbish day!

Been thinking about it on & off since last year about getting some ducks since I went to the Anglers with Dom, Rach & Preeny one day for a feed & seen some pretty cool brown/tan ducks.

Just have to knock a few things up & over first I reckon.

                      One day soon I hope

I've had a mate with ducks in highschool... can get kinda vicious with strangers that wonder into their territory but for the most part were pretty cool.

They use to dominate his dog, the poor thing wasn't allowed to do anything without the ducks say so and one paw out of line and it would be a flurry of feathers and squawking as these three ducks laid into the dog...actually was pretty funny to watch.

My best friend in high school wanted a duck so we went to Paddy's market and bought one. We had to bring it home in a hessian bag on the train. It kept putting it's head out of the bag to say "quack". The other passengers were surprised!

As for foxes, our local golf course is said to have foxes - they take local chickens - but there are also flocks of ducks on that golf course that don't seem to get eaten. Those little native wood ducks. They're very cute. I find it amusing when I see one perched on top of a chimney.

The North Shore needs more poultry.

One of the guys who used to work where I do had a couple of Khaki Campbells running around in his yard. He was very fond of them and of course he didn't have a problem with snails in his veggie patch. You will need to ensure the ducks can't be got at by foxes though. Those buggers will kill poultry just because they can.

If you want a *real* deterrent in your back yard, geese are the answer. Woe betide anyone who encroaches on THEIR territory.
