Have never heard anything bad about Thule racks.
In fact, most of the cars on vortex with racks use them.

Much cheaper and probably better quality than the vw ones.

Recently I bought the ProRack Whispbar for my GolfV and reusing them on my GTI-VI. I couldn't be more happier as they sit very low unlike the OEM VW racks. Plus they were just under 320 (VW were 350).

            $320 (fitted) - lockable
You could also fit bike racks or luggage box on these from other manufacturers too.
I bought the Thule luggage box Atlantis and it fitted like a glove.

Yeah - I could give you about a +50 vote on the Thule. At my work (a few thousand cars in the car park) Thule is by far the most popular, especially with people that have 'ski', 'bike' or 'canoe' holders on them. Thule have the 'aero bars' which reduces noise and wind buffering, as well as having the single keyed locks available as they manufacturer the entire solution.

I also like that the Thule system is completely modular, so even if you change the car you can often use the same rack with minimal of expense. I went from a 2001 Toyota Echo Sportivo 3 door to a 2008 Polo GTI and only needed to spend ~$40 to adapt the rack!

Is there a Thule roof-mounted bike rack that doesn't necessitate removing the bike's front wheel? Particularly for the Mk6 Golf.

Yeah they offer two types. One utilisies the quick-release of your front wheel (remove the front wheel and attach the bike to the roof). The other straps the wheels to the roof racks and stabilses the bike with a diagonal bar that attaches to the bike frame.

Meanwhile, my rear-mount thule bike rack arrived today..

Excellent, thanks for information, Axis. I read on the GolfMk6 Forum that some poor bloke inadvertently drove his car into his garage with the bikes still attached to the roof rack. Ouch!

Yeah I'm looking at roof racks now and it seems Thule are the best for the golf from what I have read.

Anyone know a good place to get them in Sydney ?

                      cheers

                        I've decided to get these

                        ROLA Roof Racks

As they are the lowest profile and probably best looking ones. Take 40kgs, so should have no probs with 2 surfboards or 2 bike carriers.

                        Will post pics when fitted.
