  • VW Magazine Australia #25

    Hi All,

A preview of the latest issue of VW Magazine Australia #25 can now be viewed at http://www.vwma.net.au

This issue goes on sale February 3rd. Subscribers should receive their copies over the next two weeks.

The SE Dubs Fest was given a good plug, and over the weekend the VWMA website will feature the show flyer as a pop-up from the left menu.

Also worth mentioning, is that fact I now own a 1980 Mk1 Diesel 5 door. The car is currently at my panel beaters having a few minor rust holes welded up, but other than that it's solid and a runner. Each issue of the magazine starting #26 will feature an article on its progress, beginning with the suspension and brakes (which there seems to be very little of...?)

    Cheers
    Craig

Every effort, Dom, to get to the show, but time is against me.

Could someone put me in the direction of a thread improving Mk1 brakes? I do recall reading it, but can't remember where.

will be good to see some mk1 action being featured in the magazine i love air cooled stuff but my passion is early water pumpers

As for brakes not sure on budget easiest conversion is mk1 cabby, mk1 gti and some early audi calipers and use mk1 gti rotors, bolt on no mods required use standard master and brake lines, i think you need new flex brake line depending on which calipar you get my memory is bad but the 1980 rubber brake lines properly looking 2nd hand anyways so a new set of braided lines wouldn't go astray, easy as that its what i used to run on my car (stocko 13" rims wont fit),

Ive done this conversion 3 times now, 110% improvement over stock best option is ebay usa or uk to source cailpars or if your in no rush search the forums and see what pops up.

You can buy the rotors hear in Aus new i have done in the past if you want cross drilled and slotted overseas is only option, you can go the way i have and use 280mm floating rotors but its only a diesel

Thanks. If I stay stock for the moment, aside from a flush and bleed and the usual checks for leaks, etc, is there any other adjustments on the Mk1s peculiar to these cars; ie the cross link, that will at least improve the pedal feel?

                    Cheers

Jump across to the Mk1 section and repeat the question, there's lots to learn.

MK1 brakes are actually pretty good, they're just 30 years old. Make everything new again and all will be well. Diesels did get the lowest spec brakes though so there's plenty of scope for upgrades.
