bout 50 homes and shops have been evacuated following a chemical spill at a recycling factory in Lithgow in Sydney's central-west.

A 48-year-old man has been taken to hospital after coming within less than a metre of the gas, thought to have seeped from a canister marked 'military ordinance'.

One other person is being decontaminated and treated at the scene.

Senior Constable Sue Thompson says the fire brigade's hazardous material unit is testing the substance to determine what it is.

"As a precaution a 250-metre exclusion zone has been installed around the scene, which includes about 50 houses and a number of commercial premises," she said.

Appears to be mustard gas from the military factory. some muppet driving a forklift punctured a container marked "military ordnance".

I love how the evac point is the Lithgow Workers Club. "righto, everyone here? Bob? Joan? lovely, now who wants a scotch?"

I can laugh as my grandpa is in Lithgow and he'd be wondering what all the hub-bub is about.

hmmm mustard gas would give you the irrates. Dilution is the best solution.
