  • NSW Red light Cameras

    Hi all!

Has anyone been flashed even though the light was green?

Last night I was travelling on the Cumberland rd, Canley Vale area heading towards Liverpool. I was at the St Johns rd. intersection, the light just turned green, and a flash or what a believe to be a flash. I was lead to believe that the flashes were gone and that the new cameras didn't need to flash to avoid distracting oncoming drivers..?

In more detail for those playing at home..
For those who know the intersection I'm talking about, Cumberland and St Johns rd. Intersection has 4 lanes, the far left lane is short dedicated for turning left, but it isn't a compulsary left turn - it goes on for another 50-60metres until it ends after the intersection... Then you have the inside and outside lane for main traffic going straight and the compulsay right turn lane to get onto St Johns rd.

Last night the inside and outside lane had about 6 cars on each lane, the left lane was empty, so I decided to take the left lane to avoid the traffic. Travelling at around 40ks and around 50m from the intersection the light turns green and the traffic begins to move. I decide to step on it to skip the traffic and to give me space to merge back it. As I pass the line I'm doing approx. 70-75ks then flash, the camera goes off.

Should I be expecting something in the mail?

I know it was a green light, all the other cars were moving, I even wentback to make sure it wasn't a compulsary left turn, I even took photos to prove it just in case. Funny thing I found though, was it seemed to have arrows that were removed and blackened with a yellow arrow with the word "remove" written..

I don't know what to think, or what to expect, all I know if I get something in the mail I'll have my letter ready to place into theirs and my suit ready to go to court.. Bloody revenue raisers. I was robbed of 3 points for doing 70ks in a 60 zone, funny thing is I'm still yet to drive pass the speedcamera that caught me that says 60 when they all say 70!

    Anyways, thoughts?

    Thanks!
    Anthony

I believe they are putting speed camera's in locations with red light camera's in order to stop speeding through intersections (double whammy revenue)

I thought this was already active in some parts of NSW and is being trialed in QLD

Could be that you were flashed by a speed camera rather than a red light camera, and I don't think they have to put up the signs then to notify you of the speed camera location and action.

IIRC in the ACT all Red Light camera are also Speed cameras - it makes sense, because a lot of redlight runners also speed on their way through the intersection to "beat " the lights. It also raises twice as much money.

Is it a 60kmh limit where you got flashed ? If so, then it sounds like you can expect a speeding ticket, and all the photos in the world aren't going to help with that. If you were doing 75+ in a 70 zone you are still flirting with (financial/points/licence) danger.

If you speed anywhere, anytime (even for only very brief bursts) then you may get booked.

Just called the rta, you guys are right, it is a red light camera and a speeding camera. Luckily for me though it's still on trial, and because there are no warning signs, no infringemrnts will be handed out YET. so just a heads up to those who use Cumberland highway!

i spoke to someone who works with the qld police the other day and she told me that some of the road side cameras flash randomely just as a warning precaution. revenue raising is starting to get a lil beyond a joke when they cant get the police and proper road speeds to co-ordinate.

haha, my mate did the same on that same intersection.

Lights flashed when the light was green.

That intersection will have the red light and speed camera combined.

His worried and patiently waiting as he may get a fine.
Luckily as you mentioned anthony_VWJET that this is still in trial. There are no signs indicating that it is a speed camera *yet*.

Legally they cannot fine you from a fixed speed camera without giving you advanced warning from a sign. Doesn't mean they wouldn't send you a letter, but you would be able to get out of it if they did.

No laws were being broken. I was merely testing out a camera that was on trial to ensure that the money the government robs me of, is being spent on instruments of a high standard. This will allow them to further more justify, robbing me and other motorists of our hard earned money.
