Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

My little brother (bigger than me) has finally seen the error of his ways. Noticing my continued and vocal support for the Volkswagen he has decided to ditch his Nissan Pulsar. As I have little knowledge of the later VW lineup I was hoping to put the question out there as to what to get for him. Unfortunately he continues to worship the false God Horsepower (petrol) instead of the real God, Torque. (diesel). My passage to heaven is assured.

I have tried to convince him that being beaten at the lights will not constitute a severe and damaging blow to his ego but he insists on continuing with this knuckle dragging behaviour. The answer is to travel from A to B in the most fuel efficient manner. I am unable to convince him of this wisdom, so I come to the members of the forum and ask what is the most suitable option?

He likes turbos, all wheel drive and hatchbacks. I am wondering if the V6 came in AWD turbo or if it would be better to purchase a 2.0 turbo in either 2wd or AWD. At this stage we are looking at a budget of about $15,000 for the initial purchase. Over to you guys?

    Mk3 Diesel perhaps?

Aydan has a fine example of one. There was one for sale not long ago, not sure if it was sold or not.

      He only wants petrol

He insists on a gasser, I cant convince him otherwise, I spoke to Ayden on the phone the other night, he is a good guy. Will keep trying on the diesel issue but he wants to go fast. I cant see the logic. When I have finished my MK1 with a 1.9 IDI turbo he might see my point.

What are the specs on these 2 models.

Forgive my ignorance, but what engines and transmissions do these two vehicles have?

VRT...VR6 with a turbo. VR6 is a 2.8L NA 6. 12v in Golf form, 24v in Bora form. In bora form he can get 4-motion (all wheel drive) tohugh the budget might be a fraction restrictive.
Turbo'ing a VR is expensive, but turbo VR, pretty unique, hatchback. Apparently what he wnats ?

Mk4 GTI. Golf. 1.8T 20v. Search for Pierre's (Fuzion) and see how immaculate hs car his. And Snowy's. If they don't sell him he won't get a mk4.

              The ultimate would be

The ultimate go fast car would have to be a v6 turbo with all wheel drive, did they come out from factory in this combo and how much do you reckon you would pay for such a beast?

$15,000 is not going to get you anywhere near AWD and a turbo

                sorry I lie

                  Shame about the colour

In practical terms I'm beginning to think a MK4 1.8turbo is the go, better economy and probably doable for 15,000. They wouldn't have had AWD would they?

Yes my first thought was also Audi Quattro.
1.8T and 4wd, plus comes with nice spec and excellent build quality.
VW own Audi by the way if you are wondering.
We need a wagon, so the A4 Quattro is the one, if I could manage with a sedan I would have bought that yellow one by now. I want a wagon in that colour.
I see heaps of sedans on ebay and similar for $5k upwards.
Bulletproof in a Manual and quick standard, awesome when chipped

Or Front wheel Drive, Golf 4 GTI, high ks ones are going for $10k, pay a bit more and get a better one. Very strong Solid cars, bit slow and heavy as standard, but you can do lots to them.

Bora 4 Motion 4WD, V6 NA are getting cheap too, thats a lot of car for the money. Not a hatch though.

                      AWD, v6, turbo, 15k....Tell him he's dreaming!!!

Unfortunately in the VW scene you cannot get all of those in one stock car. You can get AWD+v6, or turbo, but if you want it all you'd need to turbo a bora or R32 which would be like 10 grand on top of their prices and even they are out of the price range.

I'd go Audi too! The A4's are sick.

A MkIV GTI is about your best bet for a Euro, turbo hatch that can be fast. But for that price I reckon he should look at the Jap stable for turbo and performance.
