CAR PRICES MK 1s

I've had 4 Mk 1s given to me for free. Kind of devalues them for me.

The last one even has an uncracked dashboard.

They're still a 30 year old car after all.

I think I actually prefer the well used cars to play with, I've never really held much desire for a low mileage, mint condition GTI. I can make a $500 GLS go faster and handle better for less investment.

Mind you if someone gave me a GTI............

Me, i am still on uk prices....i wouldnt pay over 4k for a mk1...not matter how good they think it is...just not worth it IMO.

I understand UK golfs are 2 a penny, but your in Oz now. So unless you import one or move back to the UK you have to pay what the market dictates.

With these being wanted by certain people, they are worth as people say 'what your willing to pay'

Have a look on ebay if you want cheap. People on this site just won't part with cars for peanuts.

However with mk3's for $3.5K now the mk1 is for the enthusiast not a means to cheap transport imo

Personally, I think cars on an enthusiast's site are always going to be over priced compared to the general public market. I bought mine off here, and I probably paid more thant he car is worth, but I have the patience, tools and mates to get it all sorted out and on the road.

That said, Mk1's aren't exactly common cars over here. Other than the handful I see at the wreckers and the working ones at dubfest, I can recall seeing no more than 5 or so on the road in the last year (excluding cabbies).

They are rare here and when I was in the UK for a month there were NONE on the road excluding late model cabbies...

That's exactly right, and sometimes I reckon people are a bit hopeful when they should just accept it.

Take my car for example...I picked it up for chips, I've spent more than the car's price on modifying and maintaining it, but am I going to sell it for double? No chance in hell. I've always thought that if I was going to sell my car I may as well take the time and effort to revert it to as stock as possible and sell off the modified parts because it will fetch more money on the whole.

if you choose the right car anything is possible, as per my case:

1. 1999 paid $7k for an immaculate almost 1 owner 280SE 3.5 V8 Mercedes 4 door.

2. basically only cleaned it up, drove it, 1/2 a door upper the only painting done except for the wheel arches, done in Killrust white.(also pulled an enclosed trailer to Byron Bay, when we moved up there)

3. Picked up 1st in Road Class Concours at ACT show 2002.

4. Sold in Feb.2006 for $14.5k - sight unseen to a 75 year old man in WA, only as it was sitting in the garage, as I was commuting to the Gold Coast daily in company cars, and old cars need to be driven!! (the $$ were in my account on a Tuesday, and TNT collected it 2 days later...he didn't see the car for another 3 weeks !!)

Did I make any $$ probably not, but it's the best classic I've ever owned and the most reliable (and thirsty too !!)

I always end up doing a car up, getting it how I want, then get boerd and sell it.

Normally I regret it somewhere down the track.

Oh the cars I have owned and wished I still did.

Still If you want a car bad enough its worth paying good money for it.

I get enjoyment from cars so don't mind paying over the odds if its what I really want.

I paid just under 6K for my cab, its far from perfect but I do love it, and for the money I don't think their is another car I would own and enjoy as much for the same dollar value.

If your put your car up for so much and you think you can get it then so be it, ride it out and stick to your guns.

If you put your car price high and then expect to sell it within 1 week your dreaming and you know it.

I put my car up for $8000 and it seems a little high and I took everything into consideration but after all the momey I have spent keeping it to look as good as it is, I think its fair, if the car doesn't sell straight away I am not going to get ****ty or anything. If you think you can buy a car for peanuts and do it up and say holy shat its worth gazillions well good luck to you! A car is a car its a money pit, people think that they can get cars for nothing are dreaming. Mk1s are rare as I have seen one apart from our GTGs, and you can ask RayRay we almost crashed cause we were in a daze over a GLS 4 door with straight as chrome bumpers lol.

Very true Steve. Sometimes it's about who you know, not what you know, as well as sometimes being in the right place at the right time.

Like Pete said, he's got a couple mk 1's for free, sure they're 4 doors and "less desirable", but it's not as if they were complete buckets either. Both my latest mk 1's I picked up cheap, due to circumstance, but I payed a decent, infact pretty good (cheap) price for my 2 door, and I'd do it again, cause that car was worth it. (straight, rust free, and, it's what I was looking for)



I have no issue with people asking lots for thier mk 1's, it's not my place to say they're wrong or silly, just aslong as they know that' it probably wont sell like a hotcake!

Agreed. If you spend $1000 on maintainence, repairs, mods, whatever, it won't increase the car's value by $1000. Some will pay more for an unmolested car (ie original condition), some only think a modded car is worth money.

With MK1s they're definitely getting more of an enthusists car, albeit a cult one. Most you see are the granny cars that have been babied all their life and now need new owners. I'd say many aren't daily drivers - the ones that were daily drivers from birth are now scrap due to rust, poor maintainence etc, so you don't see too many of those beaters on the road anymore. To see a MK1 is almost an event worth celebrating! (Robin, that's kind of what I trying to say last night!)

I paid $2900 for mine - it was almost immaculate condition, genuine low Kms etc. It seems a fair price in itself, but also because I could afford it, I really needed a new car, I loved it and it really isn't much for a car. And worth it cos it's so much fun to drive and has been so reliable. People seem to love it - including people I know who aren't into cars at all (ie just about everyone I know). Not sure if the previous owner thought he'd sell it so quickly and easily!

I'm not sure it's worth as much now, but the depreciation on it would be minimal (unlike most VWs except for air-cooled - you can pay $10,000 for a beetle that is older, smaller and less powerful than a MK1).

But there's obviously still some steals out there if you're lucky enough, know where to look and take a chance. But also some owners also know how much they mean to them so they're not willing to part with them for less than they think is a fair price.

Also last time I put cheap coils on a daily driver, looks mad but worst thing ever for city driving.

edit: And for $10k my new car is so much better in so many ways, and only $4.5k more than the mk2, which I spent about $3k fixing up...

Yea, that's cause it's a mk 2, mk 1's are better to start off with jokes.

i'm pretty sure all of us are aware that there are 'better' cars out there etc etc etc, but most of us drive mk 1's cause we want too, not because that's all we could afford.

And we deffo don't buy coils to be comfortable!

I also crashed my car after respraying and modding it and so on. I could have quit then and got a new 'better' car. but I didn't. I got a mk 1 cause I wanted one, cause I love driving one. simple. And I spent alot more than what I did on my first mk 1, on my 2nd mk 1.
