hi guys my partner just had her getz serviced up here on the coast. they wanted to charge her $118 an hr! (this made her and myself seek other quotes as you would imagine). not that im dont saying mechanics are worth it but this seems a lil excesive,....like in a massive way. what do usual mechanics charge per hour?

i expect $60-80 an hour in most reasonable workshops for normal work.

$118 an hour for a getz is laughable - or it only takes 30mins for a service.

if that was a dealership quoting that figure then thats probly not too far off the mark. They need to find some way to pay their sales staff at the minute whilst they sit about twiddling their thumbs

Major dealers with their high rent locations and franchise overheads will charge around $120-150 per hour.

Doesn't matter what the car is, or whether it's a 1980 or a current model.

Smaller workshops will be less, because they have lower overheads. The downside is that the smaller workshops may not have the latest diagnostic equipment, and may not be trained in all the varieties of new models.

$50-80 is reasonable to pay, but if you talk to an employed mechanic or apprentice they would die for that sort of money......

I charge $80+ as do most VW workshops , some charge $90+ .
Fully licensed with MTA as motor mechanic and fully insured as well . If the workshop you go to does not have a sign out the front that they are a mechanic with an actual license number then they are legally unable to work on your car ! Mines in the process of being put up but its still visible .

As for mechanics wanting that pay , sure they all would . But tell them they have to work back late , holidays are limited and they will spend every second night doing paperwork Im sure they will be happy with where they are !

Quite right - I know all about being self-employed, have been for 18 years. Very difficult to take holidays and other time off.

Like everything - it has its rewards and drawbacks, as does being an employee. Thankfully I never need to find out if I could be an employee again.

Seb, in NSW you need a licence no. displayed.
We do not have such a system down here, not sure about the other states,
I am registered in NSW, something I had to do when I lived there years ago.
I charge $88 inc. per hour. As a one man workshop I might have 5 hours of productive earning, the rest is phone, enquiries, quoting and bookwork.
I certainly do not make a big wage once the expenses come out, probably take home more working at K Mart or somewhere... Less headaches as well...
The benefits of small business to me are very small and stress levels are high!

The dealer I get the Skoda serviced at charges $110 (inc or + GST???). They are about 60km SW of Sydney CBD where land/rents are cheap. I'm guessing the closer into town you get, the more expensive it gets. They also seem to have 2 ancillary staff (service advisors, ticket writers, courtesy bus drivers) for every spanner swinger.

Windscreen washers at intersections get a better deal than mechanics in Australia.

I loved the job, hated the pay.

yeah well they spend 5hrs on it for the 90k service. needless to say the service plus parts cost her $850. in any event shes seriously looking for a new car now the parts and srvice fees for these lil beasts is way to expensive. the local toyota dealer charged my mum $450 for the same service (she has a camry sportivo) i may have to persuade her to join the vw clan me thinks. fingers crossed. thanks again guys.

Good Lord! What on earth do they do?

So your girlfriend hasn't noticed the hourly rate before?

The depreciation on a new car is probably more than the yearly service costs.

I normally charge $70 per hour and generally have a menu type charge for servicing as i sometimes add some extra trimmings you cant charge for i.e squeeky door, easy fix rattle, quick central locking adaption.
Diagnostics and repairs without doubt $70 per hour and mobile stuff depending on area can incur a call out which is expected.
                        Cheers

90,000k service on a Getz is the timing belt service, should take 4 hours.

Camry doesn't have a service sheduled for over 2 hours until 150,000 when it is 3 hours. So, a Camry can be defined as being far less exciting to own than even a Getz - not even the service costs get you excited

mmm true in any event shes sourcing a 4x4 i tryed to get her interested in a tigger but there out of her prices range , think shes looking into a nissan. her own dad wont buy the thing off her now after hearing how much it cost her for servicing. kinda opened my eyes a bit too, to tell you the truth.

So what makes her think a Nissan 4x4 will be cheaper?

FYI, the next services for the Getz are all small, until the 180,000k one required timing belt again. So it will be the same price as a Camry until then.
