As the header says this is a must have. A Resistor wheel. This will cost you around $25 from JayCar. You can test fuel gauges, coolant gauges etc. I used this to diagnose a dodgy coolant temp sensor tonight, hooked it up to the ecu wires from the coolant sender. Golf Mk3 2.0 was poor starting warm, i suspected the sensor but no codes, so to satisfy me i hooked this up which therefore became tha sensor. I tricked the ecu to think it was cold when the engine was warm, crap start. Wound it back and started tops.
