The Thought Police in Australia have finally gone mad. A new television ad for the latest BMW Z4 shows the car with painted tyres being driven round a warehouse, the tyre tracks eventually forming a picture. The ad's been banned in Australia because, according to the Advertising Standards Board its "encouraging hoon driving". Yeah? And the V8 Supercars, F1, MotoGP, Motocross, Dukes of Hazzard *don't*?
Quotes from internet forums on this decision by the Advertising Standards Board have been overwhelmingly negative, including:
- "I guess watching Top Gear is going to influence me to part take in a beach assault with the Royal marines in a Ford Fiesta? "
- "Promoting hooning? I think not and I suppose watching Underbelly is going to influence me and my family to undertake underworld killings...."
- "I'm so sick of this cr*p. It doesn't even directly affect me, but to think that stupid whinging do-gooders have this much power infuriates me."
- "I'm not for one second condoning idiotic behaviour like burnouts. But the sort of morons who do that sort of thing are going to do it anyway, irrespective of a BMW advertising campaign."

i dont think the police are aware that BMW have been collaborating with painters/artists for decades! they only see the driving part of this advert witch really makes me dissapointed!

I wonder if they're going to ban all motorsport telecasts too. Because based on a privately owned car on privately owned property doing burnouts which are illegal on public roads being banned, all motorsport is just illegal cars breaking the laws of the road on privately owned land.

It's nice to have the thought police, so we dont have to think for ourselves. These are the guys that gave us speed cameras, make streets wiggly and put traffic islands everywhere (very handy as I drive an ambulance down them at speed...), raise taxes on naughty substances so you dont overuse them, and investigate pricing collusion at the petrol pump so well I can be assured it doesn't happen (even on weekend and public holidays...). Oh and thanks for the toll roads too - i hope you spend my rego money on something nice for yourselves.

while i totally agree with banning a lot of idiocy this is just plain stupid. banning adds from a reputable car company and dare i say a less pro hoon one at that is clear sign that they need to take a step back and think what there doing.
