If you wanted to be smart (and boring). You'd go buy a brand new Yaris or something with new car warranty and far less problems for the same price or even less than a 4-Mo.
But it wouldn't have near the same appeal and fun as a VW.

The only thing I would personally change to would be a turbo diesel. They're reliable and fast enough, easily out-tune the VR6 and the fuel is much cheaper.
Me being me though, I'd spend the money if I comfortably could, but it's EVER SO SLIGHTLY silly to blow all my money on cars while I'm living without someone else's house over my head!
Mate if you want to keep modifying cars and having fun with them, keep the VR and do little things here and there to feed the addiction. That's exactly what I've done, and despite maintenance being a bitch when it hits hard it's still worth it. I've got mates that have had 4 or so cars already and they've been driving as long as myself, and they're always looking to upgrade.
I reckon...it's not about finding the right car for you, it's about making it.
