Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Stellio78 - Changes 2 My GTI

Had the car for about 10 months now and I've made a few small changes so thought I'd start a thread to discuss possible future changes and through up a photo every now and then.

    Changes so far:

    Tinted windows
    VW wind deflectors up front
    VW boot liner
    Boot compartment LED
    VMR V710 18x8.5
    VWR panel air filter
Clutch spring and bleed valve delay removal

And a pic from this arvo after a bath

I'm thinking I might like to lower my GTI a little.

These seem to be what I'm after Emmanuele Design “eMMOTION” Lowering Spring Kit (MK7 / 8V) – AutoInstruct

I've never lowered a car before so what needs to adjusted on the MK7 after the lower springs are installed?

They're good springs; I have them on my S3.

You need to do a full wheel alignment after lowering. That should be it.

        Thanks
So you didn't need to make any headlight adjustments? Thought I read somewhere that people do.

No, as long as you've got factory bi-xenons, which include self-levelling hardware (mandated by law). I'm not aware of anyone in Aus who's needed to have them adjusted after lowering (and these springs are only a modest drop anyway).

Dumb question time: Lowering with springs doesn't affect the dynamic ride stuff does it? My understanding is that that is all related to the dampers.

You don't want to drop too far, as the dampers may be damaged. They're designed to operate at a certain ride height; by lowering, the dampers are no longer operating in their optimum range so ride quality and damper performance may be affected. However a modest drop like that provided by the ED springs is usually fine. Just bear in mind that any changes to springs is likely to void the warranty on your dampers (and potentially other suspension components).
