Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Well as its a 1.1 the engine has been kept standard so I have just focused on cleaning and painting of it to match the condition of the outside of the car.

    It has:
    gti interior
Fittipaldi steering wheel (momo I think)
    Gti clocks with rev counter
A few carbon fibre bits I made.
    Made my own boot carpet.
    Coilovers
    Febi topmounts and spacer sleeves
    15" G60 steels
Ashley performance exhaust (I cut the 3" pipe off the back as it looked stupid and put a 2" one on until I can get an upswept pipe like the supesprint exhausts.
Big brakes (not sure what they are)
Fog light on the rear bumper
    Thats about it

Some of the bits I collected for the build:

So this is how it looks now. I will be painting the rocker cover and anything else that needs done at the weekend.

They are rennsport coilovers but I heard the cheaper ones like janspeed etc are exactly the same as the hottuning ones. I thought the coilovers were a bit too far for a car with a 1.1 engine haha but since the suspension that was on it when I got it had cut springs I went for coilovers as I wanted the adjustability (I start college in August and they have loads of speed bumps ).

We can Josh, but they're very hard to find.
They came on some of the early passat's here.

Anyway, G'day Ross & welcome to VWWatercooled, hope you like it here & see what goe's one across the pond.

Love your mk1. Right up my alley style wise for sure.

Very clean & simple, yet effective & stand's out.

IMHO doesn't matter what engine is in there. You'd never know with the bonnet closed anyway & if your insurance is 2/3rd's cheaper, I'd do the same.

GoLfMan, did you mean paint the engine parts or the car? I painted the engine bay and all the parts. The parts of the car I painted were the scuttle panel, sills and drivers front wing.

I think the G60's came on passats and corrados. you can buy them new here for about £150 from VW.

              Thanks for the welcome golfworx

                Just a little update.

I painted the fan cowling, servo, master cylinder, alternator, rocker cover and manifold.

So it went from this at the very beginning of the build:

                To this:

I like it. Really clean, and classy. Well done.

except, the pipe that goes from the exhaust to the intake, thats kinda letting the side down, cause everything else looks so good!

Yeah, I should have said Im getting a new one as it split at both ends when taking it off. So there will be a nice shiny new one there soon. Should finish it off nicely.

                      Thanks

Been painting today! Sprayed the bottom of the passenger door as there were small bubbles at the very bottom. Not the best best pics because the lighting in the garage is bad.

                          Here they are:

You can see where the bubbles were where I sprayed them in white stonechip after buffing down (I didnt have any primer left). That was a few months ago now through!

Half way through the wet and dry stage.

                          Primered

                          Finished

I will get some better pics when its outside again.

P.S. Just thought I'd add - some Maestros have VW gearboxes

                          Thanks

How do you do your painting? Is it using a rattle can/pressure pack, or with a compressor and gun etc?

Cause the end results look preffy good.

I'll give you a tip Jarred.

If you use a compressor and gun.

When you have finished your top coat, remove most of the risidual paint from the gun and leave say quarter full.

Then mix like half a can of thinners into the can, give it a good shake.

Then spray a thin top coat of the new mixture and the paint when it dries will be like looking in the mirror.

I have worked in the automotive industry all my life, from bodyshops, to rebuilds to interior retrimming and always engineering !!

Trust me this is a top tip !!
