Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Ozram's slow build.

Upgraded the 118 twincharger in June to a CSG GTI and have only just got around to getting some pics together so I can start this thread.

The difference between the vehicles is quite subtle at first (apart from the obvious power advantage.) But the longer I drive it the more I believe that this is a better vehicle. With all the DSG issues and more with the 118 I must admit I felt a little nervous the longer I kept it. So we decided to bale on it just as the warranty was expiring.

I have titled this a 'slow build'. It will be, but I am happy to say that the mod bug has bitten

I'm looking for a sleeper, one that goes under the radar and doesn't look like it goes. I won't be dropping the suspension, although I understand the benefits of one that keeps the car planted and sure footed on the road. I have only a few mods so far, but the latest one has been one of the best.

Some time ago I contacted John at DNA Tuning regarding a stage 1 upgrade. His responses made a lot of sense to me, he didn't try and rush me into a sale for the sake of it and advised me to wait until I had 5000km on the odometer. I think he runs a thoroughly decent business. The only little issue was that nobody could tell me if my ECU was anti-tune and as John was in a different state it made things a little difficult as I couldn't afford the vehicle off the road.

Move forward a few months and I see John Robinson from Tigersoft advertising his Bluefin device. I sent a PM and we basically clicked straight away. I ordered my unit last Tuesday afternoon and John was straight back at me to apologise as the order had come in after the freight had gone for the day. He kept his tracking updated on his site and I received my package on the Thursday morning, overnight from Melbourne.

I followed the simple instructions and downloaded my new map from Superchips UK on Friday night. Nervously I loaded the map into my OBD port on Saturday morning. The MFD flashed a spanner symbol & I thought that the anti tune would prevent my progress. Nope! The controller signalled that everything was successful and so I started the car. WOW!!! What a difference. The mid range torque was quite addictive. It pressed me back in the seat and the speedo seemed to rise so much more quickly.

I seriously have not been able to take the smile off my face all weekend long. Without getting into tuner war zone territory I can highly recommend the Bluefin. It gives me the ability to change back to stock too, whenever I decide to.
I would also like to endorse Tigersoft Performance. Even though they are in Melbourne and I am in Sydney, John made me feel like his most important customer, a rare occurence these days.

    Thanks John.

Thanks if you managed to get this far.

Thanks very much for the kind words Ozram, you are a very easy person to do business with.

I take it you are into detailing as well? That GTi looks pretty nice. Loving the last shot, I'm going to have to try that after I finish the detail on the E39

      Cheers

Looking good. How's the comparison of the stock GTI to the Stage 1 118TSI?
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

              Hey Ryan,

Couldn't tell you mate as I never lifted the 118 above stock. The GTI has more lag, obviously. The 118 stock was very nippy off the mark, whereas the GTI used to bog down slightly. This is a little better since the tune.

Once the turbo kicks in on the GTI then the real power comes on board and the Bluefin just totally transforms the car. As soon as the turbo starts to spool its just like the car is being pulled along by some outside force, rather than being propelled by its own drive.

              Still grinnin'

Any major wheelspin/traction issues with the tune (I know I have to be very careful but then I don't have turbo lag either)?

I've only ever used launch control once to see if it worked. Too much wheel spin with that. I prefer to get it rolling then give it some curry

But yes, traction is affected if you stomp on it.

Thanks for that. Was tempted to upgrade (but not so concerned any more thanks to Guy's DSG software) but after driving both at Phillip Island I wanted to jump straight up to a 2nd hand Golf R due to it's impressive grip on the wet skidpan. The GTI just didn't feel like much of an upgrade compared to my Stage 1 118 (biggest difference was the noise and seat bolsters).

So which mod is next on the to-do list?
