Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Glad they found an appreciative new owner!

As Jared has said though, you need to slam that bad boy ASAP!!!

The smoked tails really add to the red and black theme, i'm digging it.

i'm new to the 'lowering' scene. how do u usually go about it ? is it just a matter of taking it to a garage and getting them to lower it or do i need new coilovers ?

        more pics soon

          realistically you have three options.

Buy "lowering springs" to replace your stock springs and observe your shocks s#1tting themselves over time.

Buy a lowering springs with aftermarket shocks designed for lowered springs and get low's cheaply but safely.

Buy coilovers and enjoy deciding your ride height.

Also, don't get a shop to do it. You probably know someone who could help you out one afternoon and that way you learn what's required and then you'll feel comfortable doing it yourself another time (my experience).

          BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY....

do it soon. like, real soon, that's riding higher than Rick James.

Decent? $1500. That might include shipping if you can find them somewhere. If it's a daily I'd be looking for dampening adjustment.

errrrrmmmm, yeah i'm probably leaning more towards springs/shocks then. just don't have that sort of money to blow on it

Mate I got some FK AK streetline Coilies off ebay UK for like $430 (Performance 3000)

I also ran Eibach springs with my stock shocks and had no probs. The Coilies are WAY Better (Adjustable)
But dont have much Damping. If you can live with that (I can with my Polo) they'd be the way to go.

As I see your a local...

CVWC is pretty much the only place to get them fitted by a shop and an awesome place to get your car serviced too
(Belco or Tuggers, I use Belco)

or check us out ( www.cbrvwoc.org ) we are a bunch of VW driving locals that help each other out.

Generally someone there can help (as Ryan and Cam can tell you.)

                  Hope all this helps

i found when doing my searching that lowering springs and new struts cost more then a half decent set of coilovers. look into FKs and KWs for a start, remember if you are lowering approx 40mm+ you need to work out a solution for the sway bar. and that will depend on how low you want to go

thanks guys; ~400 for collies sounds pretty good plus install.... (cheers smead)

dylan--still haven't decided how low i'd take it... how low is yours? what's enough so that I can navigate speedbumps and get in/out of driveways without cracking a sweat ??

coilovers generally come down to the rule that the more you pay the better. Id know...
Brands like FKs do seem to be best bang for you buck though if our new to it all.

umm mine, too low for where i have to drive lol. I think your roads in ACT are pretty good so you should be able to get it low enough. but then again, just depends if you want the look more then functionality.

What Dylan said is true, you get what you pay for.

Slammed Distribution have hot tunning Coilies for around the $800 mark and the FK's are good value for what they are
but both are no KW Variants...

You might want to upgrade in future and look at the more expensive ones. I'm liking my FKs at the moment despite being stiffer then my previous set up

so KW is the cream? someone posted something about how they're FKs started spitting oil and only lasted 18 months.....

the ones on ebay said they could lower about 60mm rear and up to 100mm front.. would i still need to worry about sway bar ?

if not coilies, i'll prob get springs and shocks combo.

also guys: thinking of painting the calipers.... but can't decide if red calipers would clash with the wheels, or if they should be black or even yellow ?

Go black or red I think the yellow would clash too much with the theme of the car too much
