wow i seriously cannot believe you broke the bolts!!! had the shaft been replaced or anything recently? Just wondering if the bolts were never torqued properly, cause they really shouldn't break off! the oem driveshafts take Heaaaaaps! If you do need to buy a new driveshaft oem ones from the dealer will be a killer, like 800 bucks or so! Look for a second hand one would be the best idea. Then its just a quick swap over. Or just buy a Raxle about...500ish. Hope you get back on the road soon!
I cant believe it either i think the drivr shaft and cv might be ok apparently to 2.0 golf has gti driveshaft and gearbox so it should be pretty strong the only thing im starting to think is when i got a new clutch put in almost a year ago they changed all the gearbox oil and mucked around they may not have tightened them properly if they even had to undo them? :s or possibly the driveshaft and sway bar hitting each other on a daily basis made them loose or weak if thats possible. I dont know if heard so many different things now that im gunna jut take it to someone rather then fiddle myself.
Yeah I'm pretty sure the stock driveshaft can take a hell of a beating. Mine was hitting the sway bar for like a year and no problems and now its hitting the frame pretty hard and still fine. I reckon you could be on to something with the clutch replacement. They could of loosened the bolts and never torqued them back up properly. Have you jacked the car up and tried to tighten the bolts to see if they are actually snapped? You will need a triple square bit though.
as above. mine bashes the body and sways (when they were in) all day and nothing... iv also run some pretty big and heavy wheels and no problems.
i know of someone else with a driveshaft failure and we believe it was caused by VW after working on the car, they didnt want to know about it though as the car had coilovers

hitting frame, i like the sound of that umm yeah well if no ones had problems yeah id say that could be it, the bolts werent torqued properly when the clutch was done when i bought the car because even though i was driving silly when i did it that shouldnt of happened id have expected to cv to go which is what i thought i did till i got under the car and saw what happened.
as for what your saying Dylan a year down the track i doubt the mechanic is going to take any blame on what happened lol i just have to bear it and even though i kinda deserved it by driving stupid as i think everyone probably learns at some stage. if loose bolts are the problem then this could of happened at a much more inconvenient time eg. melbourne or somewhere 5 or 6 hours away . and clearly knocking has nothing to do with it since im not hitting frame like you. my car has clearance from frame easy
back on the road i sourced the bolts through the local volkswagon dealer while the mechanic got the snapped off bolts out and checked my cv to be safe i was lucky to have no damage so $130 and away i go i have a new cv boot coming in next week which ill chuck on since mines a little split.
thanks for that yeah im stocked just too bad i had no car for a couple of weeks the problems of not having a car when im doing stuff may soon be over haha when i get my new little beast registered after i fix it up [/IMG] [/IMG]
I have now sold the mk4 guys to save some coin and give my mk1 a little more love it has been a fun car and im sure the new owner will have just as much fun with it as i did hopefully it might pop up again on the forum soon..
Im gunna miss all the luxuries of the mk4 when i start driving the mk1
