VW: it aint just a car, its a way of life There are few things more satisfying in life than finding a solution to a problem and implementing it

I ran out of time when I posted this yesterday so I couldn't put up much info. It was originally a private import from South Africa into NSW. I bought it from a guy in Melbourne and drove it back to Brisbane. It is the "Highline' or Executive spec. So it has leather, power windows, power steer and mirrors, aircon etc. When I bought it it had a fairly tired KR 1.8 16V. I then put in a 9A low mileage 2.0L 16V in it. Back in the days that I owned it 98 octane was virtually impossible to buy in Brisbane.
I then got a VSam programmable ignition put in it by ChipTorque on the Gold Coast and it dynoed at 88kW as I recall. Being a 9A it didn't have the top end of the KR but it was just so torquey it was fabulous as a daily driver. My Colour Concept VR6 only pulled just over 90kW on the same dyno about 18 months later. At the time my wife had an Australian delivered MK 2 GTI with the asthmatic 8V RV engine in it. The difference between the 2 was chalk and cheese.
I put the big bumpers on it and also got cruise contol fitted with the factory stalk and also fitted Koni yellows.
My favourite car is my current Polo GTI. It reminds me a lot of the 16V above because of the handing and the torque.

Yes, 16V are awesome, I had no idea how much I'd love it when I got one.
@Anarchy - if your in Penrith, come up to Springwood Bowls Club for dinner with us on Thursday. I'll have the MK1, Ben will have his MK2. PM if your keen!

nice, i will have to upload my sportline on the rollers when it had the twin carbs...that is pure sex!
Yes the 9A was US spec. The engine I used was imported from the US. It had milder camshaft profiles although I have heard that it was just the inlet cam that was different. The exact bhp and torque figures elude me at the moment. However I recall the 9A 2.0 had less bhp than the KR 1.8 however it had bucketloads more torque lower in the rev range. I sold my old KR engine to a mate who put the cams into his 9A and I believe that would have taken it to the same spec as the factory 2.0 16V from the South African late model Mk 2's which had 150bhp like the ABF. He had it in a lightened Mk 1 running electronic injection and it was fantastic.
However for the purists the 9A is what is referred to as the bubble block. It is shorter than the ABF and is a straight bolt in replacement for the KR. The ABF is quoted as having the same bhp and torque as the bubble block but has it is a different engine block. I think the heads are pretty similar. I am not sure if the rods are different.
I love the ABF in my Beeza. I have been punting around in the Polo GTI since December and my son parked me in the other day. I only had to go around 10 k's so I took the Beeza instead. It didn't take long to be enjoying it again.
And yes the wheels are a bit dated because that photo is around 10 years old. I believe the car is still in Brisbane but unfortunately I hear that it has been left to deteriorate badly which is such a shame as I spent a lot of money and TLC on it.

No I never put the hot chili red one on the dyno. The seat of the pants dyno said the red one was quicker, and more economical.

The Red one had the later style fuel injection system on it being a newer car. Also the CC had a supposed high flow cat put on it before I bought it and was chipped with a Remus back box. It sounded great but when I looked at the cat it actually looked too narrow for the pipes going in and out. I believe it more than likely a restriction than a benefit.
So there is some science to my 'seat of the pants' assessment. Not just talking it up, lol.
I do know that (and gearing comes into it as well) that the CC didn't feel all that much quicker than the 16V and that was confirmed by the guy who bought the 16V off me. He had previously owned a VR and after driving my 16V his assessment was 'this thing f***ing flies' en quote.
