Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • My Mk3 GL

    Hey everyone,

Put on the VR6 wheel arches and washed the car today. Decided to snap some pics of my Mk3 GL at an empty-ish parking lot, as the last time I did this was about a year ago when I got it!

I have done nothing to it mechanically, but have prepped it up a bit on the cosmetic side. Resprayed all the textured trims to bumper black again (this time with Armor All hoping it won't fade any time in the near future), replaced rear badge as the original was all scratched and yucky, new head-unit and splits, and of course the vwwatercooled forum sticker. Didn't respray the front lip as a new deep lip will go on once I purchase one from Tim, and need the OEM side skirts from late model Mk3's to complete the textured trim look (looks fugly without it atm, see below).

Here are the pics; nothing special, just your average GL wishing it was a VR6 haha

Hope you guys had a great Christmas, and have a fantastic New Year's!

    Edit: sorry for large pics!

Also, I've some BBS RS to be fitted early next year. I've to get them redrilled at a wheel shop, and maybe get the lips refurbished + centres repainted too. Don't know whether or not I should do the latter as I might purchase some other goodies for the GL (struts+springs ); however the guys that are doing the redrilling have offered to do the refurbishing+repainting at a reduced price if I get them done all together. Dammit they know how to do business! *IF* I really do get the centres repainted, I've 3 colours in mind: gold, black or redone in silver. I did a few photoshops (yes I was bored) and am loving the gold-centre look at the moment. What do you guys think? Feedback/comments would be awesome please!

Poor photoshops but they were my first attempts! Dropped it a bit too hehe

        Gold.
Also you could just paint it black under the door and it would look like the sidetrim, for a fraction of the cost.
Looks like its on stilts now. Bigger wheels needed.

            Cheers for the comments

Wish I had like, 3 sets of RS so I could chuck on whatever I feel like on a certain day

It looked pretty high without the arches, and now with the arches it looks like I'm gonna go offroading.

I might actually respray the bit where the side skirts go, until I can find the actual items!

And yeah, will be going to the cruise See you and your Mk3 too deemo!

Yeh thats a hard choice to make between the black & gold, for a white car
you should check out some springs, Proven Prodcts in Albury often have good specials on coil springs ect
When I got my mk2 gti it was on standard springs, I thought the thing was going to tip over it was that high (about the same as yours)
T o lower it is quite afforable & one of the best performane mods yu can do as it really improves the way a car handles, not to mention the improvement in looks

White Mk3's rule... I also have a thing for white Mk3's... I would go for the gold wheels bcuz it makes them stand out and be a real feature of the car...

As for the black trim my Mum's Mk3 GL has all the GTI/VR6 and it goes set off the white Mk3's very well... I'll post a pic some time...

Cool I don't know about refurbishing+repainting the wheels as it may end up costing too much for the time being. I may just clean them up myself and run them in original silver for now, then when I have everything else sorted with the car, I'll get them professionally 'refreshened' up.

And out of curiosity, are there any other Mk3's around in Australia with BBS RS's??
