  • My Refreshed GLD

Here's a before and after of my GLD following a refresh - clean up, repaint etc.

I am the second owner - I bought it last year from the original owner who had been my high school physics teacher almost 20 years ago.

I've got all the documenation for the car including the original delivery receipt.

Kms estimated around 250-300000 - being a Mk1 of course the odometer stopped sometime ago but detailed service records were kept - right down to how many litres of diesel were bought each fill and how much it cost - the early 1980's prices bring tears to your eyes.

All the mechanics are original, as is the rest of the car except a new CD player and the really keen might notice it now has the wider rims as fitted to GLS's - diesels shared narrow rims with the 1100's.

Have sold off my other Golfs in the past couple of months - felt this one was the keeper of the bunch. My next project is my '54 Oval Beetle which will keep me busy for a few years I am sure - yeah I am one of those 'strange ones' that likes both air and water.

good on you VWG81. Good looking golf you have there. Jman has one the same colour in hobart.
You are not a "strange" one. Mamy of us are VW enthusiasts and have air and water models. I have 1 1/2 k mobis, That being a campmobile and a twin cab ute. I also have a rare grman 65 beetle. Originally ordered from Wolfsburg by an African prince!
Its just that being a watercooled forum, we don't talk about them.
                Cheers, Andrew

It's certainly one to keep then, and keep original. I remember my santos green mk1 GLS cost $8575.00 new on 18th April 1979. Funny the details you remember! Back then petrol cost around 15c per litre. The GLS/GLD rims are otherwise identical, except GLS was 5" and GLD 4.5".
