Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • T4 2.5 petrol BAD oil Leak

BAD oil Leak started very slowly a couple of weeks or so ago. T4 2.5 petrol 1998 model
Thought it might be coming from the oil filter , so changed that but still running down the outside of the new oil filter only when the motor is running. Difficult area to see when filter is in the way. If i take the filter off, I cant run the motor to try see where the oil is coming from. Getting much worse. Any ideas ? Are they known to leak in an area adjacent to, or above the oil filter?

Not very familiar with the petrol engines but sometimes the filter mount is a seperate component with a gasket between it and the engine. Perhaps that gasket has given way?

I had a bad oil leak a few years back in my T4 2.0L petrol and they found the problem was the oil pressure switch ... don't know if this is located in the vicinity of your leak?

Actually did a bit of googling to see if this pressure switch is near the oil filter and came across this which seems similar to what you have described 2.5 acu petrol engine oil leak - VW T4 Forum - VW T5 Forum

Thanks so much Seano and Gold Coaster. Sounds very much likely to be the problem. I'm in central Qld at the moment. Any idea where best to order / get this part from? Will try to find a schematic first , so I can order the correct part number. ie oil filter / engine block gasket.

I was going to reply to your thread, but like Seano I am not familiar with the petrol version. I did try to look up my Etka but for some reason couldn't get it to work properly.
What amazes me is the no. of cars/vans that the kit fits, over thirty years. Well done VW.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Parts are cheap in the UK.
No wonder all the Pommies are keen to grab Transporters when they get here.
Must be a huge shock to see the parts prices in Australia.
