  • Dealer service/ T5 engine oil cooler replacement campaign.

I thought I'd publically thank my dealer, Burwin's Ferntree Gully Vic. for helping me out on short notice today.

Loaded my trailer with about 800kg of goods this morning for a 200 km delivery run on the Mornington Peninsula and on start up in the factory driveway my dashboard exhaust gas warning light remained on...called dealer and based on my info they felt OK to continue the drive and to pop in tomorrow morning.

Finished run, light still on, then back in Melbourne for a second del. run, after a lunch break no light...half hour later back on, so called dealer and said could I come in now if they have time...30km later I'm sipping coffee in the service dept. waiting area and they are replacing the sensor and the sliding door trim around the interior door handle...great service on very short notice, so Thanks to Burwins.

On a second note I got a call later saying that there is a replacement campaign on engine oil coolers for the T5 (I assume Multivans aswell). There's a thread in the diesel section although no mention of an official factory replacement campaign so I thought I'd mention it here. Mine's an MY07 T5, June '07 build and goes in this coming Monday. I was told to watch for any dashboard warning lights, specifically the coolant warning light as oil will coat the sensors within the coolant reservoir should the oil cooler break. IIRC it suffers an internal failure. Maybe a call to your dealer to see if your vehicle is involved is wise.

    Cheers.

At long last ! VWA have known about this problem with faulty oil coolers for ages, and there was a "campaign" (VW refuse to call it a "recall") in the UK some time ago, but VWA have been sitting on their hands for over 6 months.

I had the oil cooler fail on my late 2006 build 128Kw 5 cyl early this year and it was an absolute PITA. It took 5 (yes five !) visits to the dealer and over 1,000Km of fast highway driving to get all the oil out of the coolant system. The VW recommended procedures are obviously ineffective if a large quantity of engine oil gets into the coolant.

I strongly recommend that anyone with a 2006/7 build T5 find out whether their van might have one of these faulty oil coolers or not, and if it has get it replaces ASAP so you don't suffer the same ordeal as I did.

I'd also suggest that if it does leak that you pay for an oil change too (I did). VW won't cover it under warranty, but I figure that if oil can get into the coolant then coolant may get into the oil, and I don't like the sound of that.

Good to hear that Burwins looked after you so well, we often only hear about the brickbats for poor service.

      Tornado,

What sensor are they replacing? My exhaust warning light has been going on and off for a month or two and the dealer said there is a loose wire and nothing wrong with the engine. They will fix it but I don't have time to take the car in for nothing.

Do you know of VW have conquered this issue for new 2008 built T5's?
Or is it likely to occur down the track?

        Cheers,

        Scott

Unfortunately I didn't take too much notice of the specific sensor, the actual mechanic working on my van came up to me and explained that he had cleaned the sensor and it stopped triggering off the dash light however he has had them re-fault afterwards and prefers to replace the sensor if the part's in stock, which in my case it was. The name lambda sensor rings a bell..sorry can't be specific.

Best to ask your dealer as they can match faulty part to build date.

Thanks. My new Multivan arrives in about two weeks. I will ask the dealer.

I would also assume that if there are any outstanding recall issues they would be completed at PD for a new car and not left until after you are given the Multivan....has it been a long wait, my T5 took almost 16 weeks from signed order to keys in the hand?

                    G'day Tornado,
                    Thanks for comments.

Yes it has been a fairly long wait. The order was signed on 4th April and scheduled for delivery on 25th July....not long now! Just got to sell the Caravelle!

                    Regards,

                    Scott

                      oil cooler

Just rang Austral VW in Brisbane, and mentioned the recall for oil coolers, and the person checked and said it is a 3 day job to which I made a sceptical sound, but then they said that it was only for 2007 models, so as mine is 2006 then it does not need to be done.

                      Hope this is correct.

Mine was built in 2006 but is classed as a MY2007, I suggest you get it checked against your VIN to be sure.

If it has actually leaked it may well take more than 3 days, but if it hasn't sprung a leak yet I think 3 days is being pretty pessimistic. IIRC mine took 2 days for the first of its 5 visits.

Geez I hope that's wrong ....I will be given a loaner tomorrow however I didn't ask how long it would take and the dealer never gave me a time frame, I guess I'll find out tomorrow morning.

Mine goes in to Burwin's tomorrow for 30k service. Rang them today about the oil cooler thing, and they said yes, it needs changing (no arguments or arm-twisting needed) and will take about 4 hours on top of the service, so they can do it in the one day.

That's more like it, what is the year and month of manufacture of yours, and maybe it even matters what factory it was made in.

Mine is 5th month of 2006 made at Wolfsburg.
