Hard Brake Pedal

T5 2011 4motion diesel, dsg
sometimes,
about 1 out of 10 cold starts i get a hard brake pedal, then when i start the van i can almost guarantee i will get the engine management light on and its in limp mode.
like i said its not every time and there seems to be no pattern to it, apart from always a cold start.

turn van off restart and it works just fine, any ideas?

Some sort of vacuum leak?

I would say a scan would probably suggest where the fault may lie.
