  • T5 AXE excessive blow bye

Hi all I have a t5 van with 135k AXE engine which has a lot of blow bye. Just wondering if any other owners have noticed the same situation. Van seems to go ok other than having a noisy top end.intercooler pipe seams to oil up fairly regular. Thanks in advance

Pretty standard once they get a bit on in age.

Could be worth looking into what options are out there for catch cans.

      My AXE is fine(150K)
If you want opinions, need more info.
      What's the servicing regime like?Oil?
      Does it use oil?
      Noisy top end?
Does the pipework pulse at idle? implies worn camshaft, somewhat common with the early R5 motors.Google it yourself
how much oil in pipework? Mine has a film, and minor puddling at junctions.Took IC off around 130K, no oil drops.
Checked turbo bearings?Reasonably easy to remove exhaust side of turbo to check
Checked PCV valve for correct operation?

Oil changed every 10000km using vw506.01 until last change 100km ago started using valvoline XL111 5w-30 says it's suitable to use where this spec is required.
        uses about 500ml every 1500km
        pipework seams ok no pulse
just had turbo off to clean vanes did have a bit of lateral play but was not touching housing.
        New PCV valve just installed.
        Thanks for your replys

I would suggest switching back to a proper 0W30 506.01 grade, before you do some real damage to your engine, I mean in a long run - if it's 100% healthy, but in older engines, it doesn't have to take very long time.

that oil usage if correct, seems high.
I would suggest turbo's worn, but I'm not a mechanic
