G12/G13 coolant

I bought G13 coolant today from my local VW parts dept.They said they had not stocked G12 for five years and that G12 and G13 were ok to mix...If this is so what is the difference and why the need to call it 13...
Is this correct or do you have to do a complete flush?

Correct, you can only buy the purple suff these days.

It does pay to do a complete flush though.
